Maintaining the pond

Depth

A wildlife pond must have a depth of at least
2 foot this is because fish need a

place to escape from the ice in winter and the heat in the summer. Also you need

a place deep enough for the oxygenating plants which are extremely important in

a wildlife pond (there is more about them in the plants section).

Shape

Your wildlife pond must  have an area that
slopes gradually at least on one side

this allows animals such as hedgehogs a chance to clime out if they fall in. At this

part of the pond you have deep water  plants such as water lilies. You will also

have a section of your pond called the marginal area this is about a maximum of a

1 foot deep here you can grow plants like the water iris. The last section you need

is an area of wet soil called the bog area where plants like bog bean

grow.

Extras

I would also suggest putting a rotting log and
a couple of rocks there to provide

shade for animals such as frogs and newts and a place to hibernate in the winter

and make sure there are some rocks In the sun where the frogs can bask in

summer
