What is Meditation?

Calm Seas

Meditation is a way of training the mind. Just as regular physical exercise trains the body and keeps it fit, so meditation can be thought of as a method for training the mind and keeping it in a healthy state.

Through meditation practice, it is possible to develop a positive and clear state of mind. This isn't thinking 'good' thoughts, or painting on a smile. It is bringing out the best in yourself, in the quality of your emotions and of your thought. It is a way of reducing the build up of stress, anger and other emotions which can make life difficult for you and those around you.

Meditation can help you develop calmness and tranquility, reduce stress, and live life more meaningfully.

At Amethyst, our meditation evenings consist of two guided meditations which we do whilst sitting upright in a comfortable chair. The chairs are arranged in a circle and we play some opening songs / music beforehand which helps everyone feel at peace. Each meditation lasts an average of 25 - 30 minutes, after which we have time to discuss the meditation and are always keen to receive comments and feedback from everyone participating. That way, we can gauge what type of meditations appeal the most and which give the most benefit, and then hopefully we can aim to produce more along those lines.
