The West Door of the Abbey |
The present parish, which is situated on the eastern side of Port Talbot, owes its history to the foundation of Margam, first as a Celtic place of Christian worship from at least the fifth century and then through to the founding of Margam Abbey in 1147.
At the dissolution of the monasteries the abbey became the parish church and during the last 450 years the parish boundaries have varied several times.
Some twenty-three years ago St. David’s church was removed from the parish of Port Talbot St. Theodore to become part of the enlarged parish of Margam. |

The social composition of the parish is mixed.
Formerly this was a predominantly agricultural area but since 1950 the massive steelworks has been the main provider of employment though the work force has been considerably reduced over recent years.
Other local residents, drawn from all walks of life, include representatives from a range of professions, civil servants and shopkeepers.
The population of the parish is approximately 3500. There have been new housing developments in recent years and considerable infilling housing near St. David's church. | ||||
