Fitting A Tilt & Slide Sunroof by James Ross

Firstly you need an existing roof with tilt and slide action, I cut the roof off a Volvo 460 at the scrapyard with a hacksaw, the roof cost me £20.

I removed the internal accessories, these included the courtesy light, sun visors and grab handles (the rear grab handles also had internal courtesy lights). I needed a Philips style screwdriver and an Allen key to remove these items. A flat screwdriver is also useful for removing screw covers.

Next I removed the roof lining, it was fairly simple to remove, it was held by two clips at the rear and a couple of double sided sticky pads around the edge.

The next stage was far easier than I thought. All that needs doing to remove the entire sunroof assembly is the removal of 6 10mm bolts, this allowed the sunroof assembly to be pulled clear.

Next I sized up the assembly by placing on top of my Fiesta roof, the motor assembly mounting plate needs to be trimmed slightly and the sunroof hole will need to be enlarged, lining up the front edge of the sunroof hole with the existing hole should allow the motor to fit neatly.

The area shown hanging over the edge in the bottom picture will need to be trimmed off and two new mounting holes drilled.

Now its time to start cutting, take your discarded roof skin from your donor car  and use a grinder to cut around the lower roof reinforcing skin (the rectangular area approximately 6 inches wide of the sunroof hole.

This should leave you with a rectangle with the sunroof hole in the middle and a large hole in your roof, remove the brackets that held the sunroof assembly and then throw away the remains of the roof.
