NEWARK NOTES from the Secretary

January 2006

'Tis the season....

The trip to the east coast that I'd hoped would run in the late autumn never materialised, the usual combination of other commitments, indifferent weather and personal inertia working to stop any activity in that direction. Perhaps next year.....

At Colin's suggestion, three of us from Newark did show our faces at the DA AGM in mid November, though the next week it was me on my own again. Colin joined me the following week when we headed for the café at Caenby Corner, though we turned short and settled for a bowl of soup at the pub in Ingham, due to the prospect of freezing roads and failing light.

Into December, and the same non-intrepid pair took a short jaunt to the windmill at Wymondham, on a ride that caught, totally unplanned, the sight of a steam train running an enthusiasts' excursion on the line from Melton to Peterborough. Pure, unexpected, magic; if only I'd got my camera out more quickly.

You should know what comes next; the second weekend in December and it was the annual excuse for eating and drinking. Not that we cyclists need an excuse to eat and drink, of course. A pleasant morning provided an opportunity for some of us to work up an appetite, then, by popular request, it was back to the Malt Shovel, who provided the customary excellent spread.

Another tradition continued the next weekend with a ride to Belton for the Mince Pie Run. No Audax for us this year, Colin and I used the easiest route to get there, though we did meander a bit on the way home, exploring bits of the Grantham Canal towpath. On coming out of the village hall, Colin thought there was something wrong with his hat. Investigating it, he found a pair of gloves inside, and as he couldn't remember having worn them on the ride out, concluded that he must have ridden all the way with them inside his hat!

I was away over the Christmas break, visiting my family and sneaking out occasionally for an hour or so on my bike in between cooking and washing-up duties. Meanwhile, back at Newark, the Saturday runs went ahead as usual, but there were no extra rides due to the snow which hit the area.
