NEWARK NOTES from the SecretaryJanuary 2005 We ought to get out more Apologies for a slightly shorter 'Notes' this time (thank goodness, do I hear you say?), but for obvious reasons there hasn't been so much activity on the cycling front. If October went out with a bit of a bang with the weekend in Skegness, November came in with a bit of a whimper. Either we were all too knackered after the previous week's exertions, or perhaps it was the fog and drizzle that ensured we stayed at home. The following Sunday was brighter, and Colin and I rode the Sustrans path along the old railway from Lincoln to five mile bridge. Stopping for tea in the café, we were told that work was about to begin on the next section of the path to Bardney. Brian, who used to drive trains along the line in his working days, tells me that bridge work is likely to be required for this so it may not be a particularly quick fix. If there's one ride that normally gets a good turnout it's the annual Christmas lunch, and this year was no exception. Those of us wanting to work up an appetite took a short ride before the meal. The local lanes had been made mucky in places by traffic having been diverted to avoid an accident on the A17 the previous day, but apart from that, there were no problems. We joined the others at the Malt Shovel, where we tucked in to the pub's usual excellent fare. Pete and myself took a ride up north of Lincoln the weekend before Christmas, doing some research for a possible 'rural ride' for next year's program. Not sure if the destination will make it into the rural rides; close, but no cigar was my verdict. I was away over Christmas, but the rest of the crew kept going over the break. With our traditional venue closed for refurbishment, Boxing day saw a run to Caythorpe, Lincs, which would at least have given them a cracking descent on the way back, while on New Year's day, a good crowd went out despite the rain. January 2nd was surprisingly bright, and Colin and I started off the year with a shortish run taking in Grantham and a few 'loops' Looking forward to 2005? Well, there's quite a lot being planned, including more weekend Hostel trips and possibly a week in Belgium. Watch this space.
