I've produced several variants of the Special Weapons Dalek so far. None are strictly
canonical but all are very similar to the Special Weapons Dalek that appeared on TV. The variants,
illustrated below, are intended to represent how the Dalek would have looked had it featured in the
following Doctor Who adventures:
- The Daleks (1963) - Like the Imperial Special Weapons Dalek that appeared on TV, this
variant has no solar slats.
- The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964) - This variant has the enlarged base and dish
on its back that distinguish the invasion daleks.
- The Power of the Daleks (1966) - This variant has solar slats and the classic sixties
silver/blue colour scheme. The slats are very blocky and quite reminiscent of a new series Dalek, but
it seems to work. This variant would also do for “The Chase” (1965),
“The Dalek's Master Plan” (1965/6) and “The Evil of the Daleks” (1967).
- Day of the Daleks (1972) - This variant has solar slats again, and has the deeper base
that distinguishes the seventies daleks from those that appeard in the sixties. It also has the
seventies grey/black colour scheme.
- Death to the Daleks (1974) - Solar slats, a silver/black colour scheme, and the base
now has the protective flange around its top rim that featured on most daleks from this time on.
I put 25 solar slats on the model, 17 long ones around the sides and back and 8 short ones above
the gun block. This compares with 23 slats for a classic dalek (17 long and 6 short) and 18 for
a new-series dalek (13 long and 5 short, although one of the short ones is double-width). The
reason I put so many slats on this Dalek is partly because its shoulder section is bulkier than
a normal Dalek's and so can take more, and partly because the excessive width of the gun block
means that it looks better with 8 short slats above it instead of the normal 6.
