Over the years, I've had different favourite places in London. When I was younger I used to go to Greenwich Park on Sundays with my Dad and family. We used to park somewhere on Blackheath, walk down the avenue to the statue of General Woolf, down the hill and under the river. Sometimes we would visit the Observatory or the Naval Museum. My brother and I could rely on one or two treats: ice cream and/or a bottle of Coca Cola. When I was a little older, I went there a few times just with my Dad. I lost him quite a long time ago now, and I used to have a nostalgic feeling about Greenwich. He liked to explore, and we once walked along the riverside through old docking areas with a surprising right of way. Another time we wandered around an old church. Both of these were well away from the more attractive but very familiar routes where people normally go. I did photography at school; I could have taken the O level but the CSE was far more practical, which is what I wanted, and I intended to get a a Grade 1 - which I did. One of my tasks was some pictures illustrating the idea of Figure and Letter Forms. I like this one, where I got my Dad to stand next to me in front of the Cutty Sark. I still like Greenwich, but more for its history and symbolism than actually visiting the place. These days, my favourite area is along the South Bank from the Hayward Gallery area to the Tate Modern. I enjoy the view over to St. Paul's, reminding me of London's tremendous history. I think the Millennium Bridge is fabulous, connecting as it does the old - St. Paul's - and the modern - the Tate. |
