Welcome
to my web page. On this site is a collection of photographs from my dads
(Derick Griffin) photo album, taken during his service on the H.M.S Concord
and the H.M.S Vanguard
between the years 1950-1952. Unfortunately i never got to ask him about
the pictures in the album as he died in 1983 but i have always been interested
in finding out more about the ships and the people who served on them.
If you do have any further details about the ships or recognize any of the people in the pictures i would be very interested and certainly appreciate it if you would let me know. You can e-mail me using the link at the bottom of this page.
What i do know is that the H.M.S Concord (R63) a C class destroyer, was built in Thornycroft on the 14th March 1945 and was sent to Korea during the war. Most of the pictures in the album were taken during this time. It was scrapped at Inverkeithing November 1962
The following information i have discovered on the H.M.S Vanguard: HMS Vanguard was the last of the great Royal navy battleships, built at Clydebank, she was launched on the 30th November 1944, and did not see service during world War Two, She was the biggest British battleship with a displacement of 42.500 tons. she carried 8 15-inch guns and a secondary armament of 16 x 5.25 inch guns and 71 AA Guns, her compliment was 1600. She finally was scrapped just 15 miles from where she was built at Faslane, 9th August 1960.
Displacement:
52,245t Speed: 29.5kt
Complement:
1,900
Armament:
Eight 15 inch guns, sixteen 5.25 inch guns. Seventy-three 40mm anti-aircraft
guns.
