Portfolio

For the last few years, I've been employed as a Technical architect, both doing enterprise/application architecture and consultancy. Prior to that, I spent a long time developing applications, and UI design has always been a hobby of mine. With that in mind, I've put together this portfolio, largely of websites created up until mid 2001. For reference, some of the more major projects I've been working since include:

Previous websites

MyPocketPal is a full e-commerce and m-commerce lifestyle portal, that includes almost all the features that you can think of for a site of this type. My role on the project was as lead web-developer, and whilst the look-and-feel was largely governed by an external design agency, it was my task to integrate and modify this as necessary to fit with the process-flow and use-cases of the site.

In addition to being the lead web-developer on MyPocketPal, I was also the lead WAP developer. This was one of the first functioning m-commerce sites in the UK, including fully searchable product databases, online ordering, SMS reminders, contact management and calendar services, e-mail functionality, etc.

Tradinterchange is a full e-auction system that has millions of pounds of transactions throughput daily. My role on this project was as project-manager and lead web-developer (including all artwork, etc). The site had to not only be simple to navigate, quick to load, and compatible with all browsers from v3.0 upwards, but had to be re-brandable as different organisations use it for their purchasing and selling.

Nymec Corporate Site
Nymec Corporate Site v1.00

While the first full Nymec site was being created, this placeholder page was created. Once the site went live, this page was altered to demonstrate the ability to separate presentation from data - allowing sites v1.10 and v1.20 to be created from the same ASP pages, by applying different style-sheets, and page-appearance frameworks. All design, content, and development done by myself.

The first full Nymec site went live with the look and feel of early Windows-XP (Whistler) builds. The design was kept simple due to time-constraints, as all of the content, design, and development required needed to be done from scratch. Design, content, and development implemented by myself.

With a little more time, v1.20 of the site was for IE only, and automatically detected the browser version, with v1.10 being used as the fall-back. The design was never used as the main corporate site, more for technology demonstration purposes. It used advanced DHTML to simulate scroll-bar, menu, and cursor widgets. All design, content, and development implemented by myself.

With a slight change of corporate identity (mainly a colour change to the logo), a new site that represented the focus of the business was needed - clean yet comprehensive. The design for the new site combined multi-browser DHTML with classic design. All design and development implemented by myself.

BP Global Alliance

Working as a consultant for the BP Global Alliance Supplier Review system, I redesigned the appearance of the site to something more graphic, along with programming the web-based portion of Phase 1.

The Nymec Development Site is used for the promotion and support of Progeny - Nymec's development tool. Along with customising an off-the-shelf messageboard, I designed and developed the site along with its content. The appearance of the site had to both be inline with the corporate site, yet more technical, and simpler to maintain due to the lower priority of the site.

The Works
The Works

This site was an Intranet for The Works - a recruitment company based in the North of England. My role was to design the UI for the site, along with the artwork, and to create a CV generator that would convert web-entered data into a Word document.

Although I try to keep all of the sites listed here from my recent work, I thought I'd include one of the (many) old designs for the AlterVisitor site here for posterity. This design was used from early 1999 onwards. I tried to make the visuals as pleasant as possible, but one of the main goals was to make the site run on the Web application on Psion (and other EPOC) organisers.

Cisco K-Base
Cisco K-Base

The K-Base is an Intranet system in use by Cisco. I was employed as a consultant on this project, where I led the development of the website, ensuring its timely delivery, and completion of functionality.

Although I did not work directly on the GPInfo Portal, I developed the SiteBuilder application for it. This application creates full-websites from the essential details that are entered. The main success criteria for this were ease-of-use and speed (as over 10,000 needed to be generated). As well as creating the necessary HTML/ASP pages, the application also created the necessary sites on the web-server, registered the domain names, handled e-mail forms, and allowed full maintenance of the system.

System-X
System-X

Whilst developing Progeny, one of my tasks was to produce a set of web-templates to give different looks and feels to the generated applications. This template was called System-X, and was designed for use in Intranet environments where it could integrate closely with native Windows applications due to the similar UI.

As a sample of my non web-based work, here is a screenshot from Progeny - the Windows development tool project on which I was technical architect. As well as writing the web-site and static site generators, the build-log, the documentation, creating the artwork, working on build-automation, Source-Safe integration, performing extensive work on the UI, and implementing a configuration file system, I also wrote all of the web-templates for the system.

For version v2.00, I wrote the ASP.Net generator, the web-templates, developed the architecture, did substantial work on the VB.Net generator, the C# generator, and the SQL Generator, and more.
