John Boyne visited ICBG on 16th January 2006
This was John's first stop on a UK tour to promote his first children's
book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. His talk was very well attended by over 40
adults and children. John talked about the development of his idea for the story,
explained a little about the publishing and editting process and followed this by reading
a short extract from the novel. After this he answered questions posed by the audience and
signed copies of his book.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne ISBN:
038560940X Synopsis
This work was set in Berlin, 1942. When Bruno returns home from school one day, he
discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a
promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where
there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches
as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the
distance. But, Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this
desolate new place than what meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets
another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting
results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.
Information from Sarah Jenkins (ICBG): We have been offered an event with a new
children's author, John Boyne who's first book comes out in January called The Boy in
Striped Pyjamas. Its written from the point of view of the 9 year old son of the
commandant of Auschwitz and having read it, I think it will be the hit of the year.
Its very much a crossover book - appealing to adults and older readers alike (much like
Across the Nightingale Floor and The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night Time).

| Reviews (from www.amazon.co.uk) An incredibly touching story, December 29, 2005

I bought this book knowing very little about it being as the synopsis deliberately
gives very little away. Since I finished it friends have asked me what it is about but I
won't let on because I believe it really is best read not knowing.
All I will say is that you will not be disappointed. It may well be aimed at children
but I personally found it to be one of the most moving books I have ever read.
I AM THE AUTHOR'S AGENT, September 14, 2005
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas is an absolute heart-stopping gem of a book and I
guarantee that it will touch you and move you like very few books you have ever read.
Everyone here at the agency I work in is awaiting publication with baited breath - I truly
believe this has huge world-wide potential.
