World 8-Ball Pool Rules – Simplified

Start

Breaks will be alternate following the toss of a coin before the first frame.

Break

At least 4 balls, other than the white, must make contact with a cushion or a ball must be potted. Penalty for foul break is 2 visits

Following the break shot

1.       If the white is potted from the break it is a one shot foul

2.       If the black is potted from the break it is a re-break by the same player – no penalty

3.       If no ball is potted from the break it is an open table to the oncoming player

4.       If a red or yellow is potted from the break, the player making the break shot must nominate which colour he/she wishes to play

5.       If a player pots a red from the break and then nominates red, the player remains on red

6.       If a player pots a red from the break and then nominates yellow, the player must then pot a yellow to remain on yellows

7.       If a player pots a red from the break, nominates yellows and then does not pot a yellow then the oncoming player has an open table.

(note: for points 5,6 & 7 if a yellow is potted the same rules apply)

Playing the game

At each visit to the table a player must either:

a.       pot a ball or

b.       cause any ball to hit a cushion after the white has made contact

Fouls

All fouls result in two visits to the opponent except:

a.       White in-off break

b.       Opponents ball falling in pocket without being hit

These two fouls are a one visit foul (for point b, the ball falling in would be replaced over the same pocket)

After a foul the player in control cannot have ‘cue ball in hand’ and MUST play a ball from their nominated group (unless a Foul Snooker situation applies or he/she wishes to play a Deliberate Foul)

Deliberate Fouls

A deliberate foul can be played at any time without losing the frame. An example of this is if a player is on yellows and a red is blocking a pocket the player wishes to have control of, the player can pot the red either directly or by planting another ball onto the red. A player can also strike the cue ball without contacting another ball. A player can also play the black ball but cannot pot the black or he/she will lose the frame. If a deliberate foul is played 2 visits are awarded to the opponent.

Snookers

a.       Total snooker
Not being able to directly hit any part of a ball, in a straight line shot (ie without swerving or coming off a cushion, of the players own group. The player will ask the referee for a ‘Total Snooker’. When a total snooker is given, the player does not have to contact a cushion after making contact

b.      Foul snooker

Following a foul, a player is unable to hit either side of one of their own group of balls. The player will ask the referee for a foul snooker. When a foul snooker is given, the player may either move the white behind the string line or nominate a specific ball of their opponents group of balls.

Push shots & Touching Ball

A push shot ‘foul’ can only be given if it can be clearly seen that the cue pushes the white along such as a touching ball situation where a player MUST play away from the ball the white is in contact with or if the cue strikes the white twice. If there is any doubt, a push shot foul is not awarded. If a touching ball is awarded the cue ball must hit a cushion or cause another object ball to hit a cushion or a foul will be awarded.
