Schoolwork
Peter has worked in several schools helping pupils to express themselves through creative writing. As a qualified teacher, he is familiar with the different methods of teaching, the demands of the national curriculum and the need to help pupils express themselves through various literary forms. He is able to offer four different forms of writing tuition:

General Creative Writing

Helping pupils to write poetry or prose, either on a theme which he will choose, one to fit in with the teacher's own teaching programme, or on themes which the pupils select themselves.

From Page to Stage

Peter will take a topic which is pertinent to the pupils, and, after teaching the rudiments of writing a play, will help them to write their own drama. This needs to be done with an older primary school age group and would take four to five days to produce a 20-30 minute play.

Themed Creative Writing

This can be done through drama, poetry and/or prose. So far, Peter has dealt with the following themes:

  • Anti-Bullying
  • Local Coal Mining Disaster (North Wales)
  • Asylum Seekers
  • Christmas
  • The history of local factories
  • The history of a school through the lives of three generations of the same family
  • A play inspired by pupils' love of football (Blackburn)

Poetry and Art

To encourage pupils to respond to ideas by writing poems and painting can
be extremely powerful. Peter works with the artist Keith Bayliss.

In Autumn 2006, they were involved in a major project with the Big Pit in
Blaenavon and five local schools.

In 2007 and 2008 they worked with five schools on the theme of Bullying.

In 2007 with six Carmarthenshire schools they produced work on the
theme of Landscape.

Recommendation - letter from a head teacher

To Whom It May Concern

Peter Read has worked extremely successfully within our school and he is highly regarded by our teachers for the professional way in which he approaches literature, notably with respect to plays and poetry.

The children in our school who have had the opportunity to work with Peter have demonstrated great enthusiasm. The resulting plays have been of a high standard, both with respect to their quality and also the discipline of performance.

Peter seems to have the talent of challenging our children to improve at both creating original works and also performing them. Children like working with Peter, as do our teachers.
