Playwriting
In addition to acting and writing poetry, Peter Read has written seven stage plays.
Three Sides of Eastside
Performed at St Thomas' Community Centre, Swansea, with school children and professional actors on July 7,8 and 9. The play grew out of conversations between pupils and their parents and grandparents, plus other people in the community. Through the eyes of three generations of one fictitious family, but drawing on true stories, the play charted the story of a dockside community and its school.
Shearer or Me!
performed by Blackburn Drama Club
Thwaites Empire Theatre, Blackburn 27 May 2008 - 31 May 2008
Presented by Blackburn Drama Club in association with the Thwaites Empire Theatre.
Dave is a lifelong Rovers fanatic, and now thanks to 'Uncle Jack' and 'King Kenny' the Rovers are back in the Premiership, and what's more with a chance to win the Title, but what of his long-suffering wife - will it be a case of 'The Winner Takes it All'?!
BBC Radio Lancashire launched a travelling exhibition of Premiership memorabilia on 12 May 2008 to coincide with this production in their Open Centre on Darwen Street.
To Hull and Back
performed by Fluellen Theatre Company
at the Swansea Grand Theatre, Singleton Street, Swansea, February 2008
The sequel to Toshack or Me! . It is 2003 and the Swansa are in danger of extinction both on and off the pitch. One game away from relegation from the Football League, things couldn't be worse. A superhero is needed to come the rescue. Manager Brian Flynn? Captain Roberto Martinez? Striker James Thomas? No. This looks like a job for Vicar Joe.
Toshack or Me!
performed by Fluellen Theatre Company
at the Swansea Grand Theatre 2006, 2007 and 2008
It is 1981 and for the first time in its history, John Toshack's Swansea City is on the brink of entering football's top division. Dave has watched them since the 60s but, during his three-year marriage, Holly, his football-hating wife, has tried to block his trips to the Vetch. When he lopes off to Newcastle to watch the Swans and fails to tell her, she decides it's showdown time. Who does he love more? John Toshack or her? Dave's friend, Vicar Joe, is not much better. Praying in services that God will help the mighty Swans to conquer their opponents lands him in deep water with the Bishop. Will he keep his job? Will Dave keep his wife, and will the Swans keep their fans happy and land the big prize?
Only The Truth
The Swansea Grand Theatre Arts Wing
A play commissioned by the Society of Friends.
John ap John leaves the New Model Army in the 1660s and is sent as a spy to report back on the exploits of George Fox, the founder of The Quakers. Instead of highlighting the dangers of Fox, he falls under his sway and is converted to Quakerism. In Swansea he challenges the local preacher in the Anglican Church, is arrested and thrown into prison. Incarcerated without charge, the play resonates strongly with today's political situation. John ap John is mistreated by one of the jailors and cared for by the other. They all have strong beliefs, which are diametrically opposed to the other two, but which of the three has the truth?
Dixie or Me!
The Stiwt Theatre, Wrexham
(premiered March 2005)
The play charts the rise and rise of the successful Wrexham Football team in the
late seventies. It received excellent reviews and was watched and appreciated by members of the 70's squad and the current Wrexham team.
From Broadway to Broad Street
(premiered November 2004)
The theatre in a small town is failing and so the clueless committee gather to squabble over the best way of raising money. They actually agree to stage a musical but which one? Alice, cosseted and sex-starved, wants one with plenty of hunky men. Phyllis, the chapel deacon, is after one with a spiritual theme, while Bob, the American, who has somehow been washed up on the streets of the Welsh town, is after something very BIG and GLITZY. Jack will go along with the others. Which means he ends up as uncertain at the end as he was at the beginning. The play is peppered with excerpts from the various musicals under discussion.
