The Marquetry Course
The Book

A complete and concise book on marquetry fills a long awaited need to students, hobbyists, furniture makers and furniture restorers. Written with beginners in mind, ten classic designs are included, with over 300 step-by-step coloured illustrations offered in the form of tutorials. Designs such as fans, shells, patera, compass rose, husk swags and modern floral work. Geometric parquetry including the chessboard, Louis Cube, basket weaves and the amazing chevron construction. Four furniture making projects include an 18th century oval gallery tray, a pier table mirrored to Thomas Chippendale's original, as well as a modern jewellery box and a delightful folding two-sided fire screen. Computer aided designs (CAD) accompany the furniture making projects.

A fully supported and approved publication for students taking City & Guild (C&G) furniture making and/or furniture restoration, in colleges across the UK, the book follows the course curriculum set by C&G for veneering and marquetry.

The authors demonstrate the art of maximising quality photography with clear unambiguous writing. Students and hobbyists will develop skills by building the timeless 18th Century motifs, much evident in both period and modern furniture across the world. The book introduces the innovative technique of 'two-part pressing'. Practical information on mounting, pressing, sanding and finishing complete this comprehensive marquetry course.

The book took three years to complete and the authors worked hand-in-hand with 'External Verifiers' at London City & Guilds, to ensure the contents matched students college work.

Book launch was July 2003, and already it is translated and printed in Dutch and German. Professional furniture guilds on both sides of the Atlantic, place this publication in the 'classic' mode. See reviews.

To our delight the 1st (English) Edition has completely sold-out, in just 2 years! Currently global sales top 15,000, which in our opinion, is attributed mainly to the classic designs of one man - Thomas Chippendale!
