Dawn is a ball of energy that the monks made into human form and sent to the Slayer in the form of a sister so she would protect it from hell-god Glory, who wants to use the energy to get back to her hell dimension which will open all hell onto earth.
The monks also made memories which they gave to the Slayer, Joyce, and the Scooby Gang so they remembered her as if she had been alive for all the time.
She acted like a normal, stubborn teenage girl.
After long they found out that she was 'The Key'. When Dawn found out she found it hard to deal with but finally accepted it. When she found out what she was created for it was also a rough time.
Unfortunately Glory kidnapped Dawn and during the blood-letting ceremony the portal started to open. Buffy sacrificed her life to save her sister and the world.
Now Dawn must deal with a world without her mother and her sister. Living with Tara and Willow in the Summers house with the Buffybot until the true Buffy returns from well...being dead.
When Buffy returns it completes Dawn's world but she starts to steal lots and feels ignored. The gang and Buffy find out about both and have to start to deal.
Buffy and Dawn start to spend more time together and when Willow turns evil and Buffy and Dawn are trapped fighting earth monsters Dawn has to help Buffy fight with a sword showing her skill, obtained by watching Buffy when she usually fights.
Buffy realises she has to stop protecting Dawn from the world but show it to her.
Dawn is almost completely included in the Scooby gang now and often fights with them.
