Mid-Berks Newsletter - August to December 2009 - edited extracts

Summer 2009 has brought us a wide range of walking weather from strong sunshine to more rain than we might have hoped for. All our events have attracted walkers, however, some in very good numbers.  Thanks again are due to the leaders, to our Committee and to all those who continue to work for the smooth running of our Group.

Some events need particular mention. Since I last wrote, very memorable for those who went was our visit to Derwentwater. A gentle area round the lake for those who followed Monica, lower slopes with fine views as Russell led us up to Castle Crag, Jill took a lively group over Cat Bells and all Pauls’ group lost count of the number of peaks they conquered !!! Walks using bus routes have added to our range especially as they are linear; fewer cars on roads and less need for finding parking places for them must be good. Sonia has another bus walk on this programme.

Some of us enjoyed the visit of a group of ten of our Blind friends, together with two lively dogs, who travelled from London recently. They do so much and travel so far we feel a little in awe of them.

Forthcoming Events – Still to come in August is an evening stroll and meal to celebrate the Diamond Wedding of Teresa and Derek, the Treasure Hunt walk hosted by Ken and Jenni and Jean’s Bank Holiday walk.

Mid-Berks Newsletter - May to August 2009 - edited extracts

Spring 2009 has brought us a wide range of walking weather from unseasonal sunshine to late snow. All our events have attracted walkers, however, some in very good numbers. Thanks again are paid to the leaders, to our Committee and to all those who continue to work for the smooth running of our Group. Recent events need particular mention. On March 28, Chris and Rita set up a display in Broad Street, Reading to raise our profile and attract more members. The green umbrella, jolly bunch of balloons, range of fresh posters from Ramblers’ Headquarters and piles of leaflets, programmes and application forms attracted at least 51 people who stopped to talk to us even in a cold wind,  Again thanks. On April 1st, another first! Increased numbers came and enjoyed the lavish meal cooked by Jenni and Monica; then settled down to listen to Colin Hennell’s talk.

Forthcoming Events

Those going to Dewentwater leave on April 27th - three weeks away as I write this – by then you should have received this new list of events. Look out for Sonia’s Bus walks – [useful if you have a bus pass!]  The times given are for when the bus leaves so get to the stops near Reading Station in good time. Note if you need to park a car in Reading, Hills Meadow and Napier Road CPs are free on Sunday and a short walk through the Station. We have also included 4 evening walks, each followed by a meal. Please let the leader know if you wish to eat, so bookings can be made for the likely number. [see note for Aug 27]  In August also we have the usual Treasure Hunt walk, shared with Pang Valley Group and the Bank Holiday Walk as well as our regular three walks a week. We hope to see you often.
