Sites about Children's Books

ACHUKA

This United Kingdom based children's books site covers everything from toddler's board books to teenage novels. The site is independent (it doesn't belong to a publisher or a bookshop) and has a selection of news, reviews and interviews with leading children's authors as well as a weblog and a message forum.
It used to be THE best children's book's site on the web, however a revamp in 2003 resulted in a lot of the site's best material being taken off-line (apparently temporarily). However, it's still an excellent site and well worth a visit.

Word Pool

This UK-based site has lots of useful information including reviews, author profiles and advice for aspiring author's and illustrators. Its main shortcoming is a lack of graphics and illustrations (even book covers).

Mrs Mad's Book-a-rama

Another good UK-based children's books site with a searchable database containing lots of in-depth reviews.

Stories from the Web

A great site divided into three sub-sites, covering writing for 0-7, 7-11 and 11-14 year olds. Each sub-site features reviews, games and galleries where children can send in their own stories.

Books Unlimited - Children and Teens

This is the children's literature section of the UK Guardian and Observer Newspapers' web site . It's a bit difficult to find your way around, there are no pictures and it's rather unimaginatively presented - but there are many interesting articles, interviews and reviews.

The Children's Literature Web Guide

This independent Canadian site is very good for finding out about other children's books sites on the internet, although the last time I looked it had not been updated for some time.

The UK Top 20 Children's Chart

The top 50 best-selling children's books in the UK (updated weekly).

The Publishers Weekly Children's Best-seller Lists

The top 10 best-selling children's fiction and picture books in the US (updated weekly).

National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE)

This site, which is targeted at teachers, contains a wide selection of high quality children's book reviews.

Authors' & Illustrators' Own Sites

There are lots of sites that have been set up by authors and illustrators themselves
Here are just a few that are worth visiting.
The Children's Literature Web Guide
and the UK Children's Books site both feature links to many more

Wormworks - Helen Cooper & Ted Dewan

The joint site of the husband and wife author / illustrators of Pumpkin Soup and The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Bada Bling - Curtis Jobling

The multi-talented illustrator of Dinosaurs After Dark is also the designer behind the animated series Bob the Builder and Frankenstein's Cat.

Steve Cox

The illustrator of Pigs Might Fly and several hideously complicated pop-ups.

Do You Mind If I Knit

The blog of Mole illustrator, Vanessa Cabban.

Philip Pullman

The author of His Dark Materials

Robert Sabuda

The illustrator and paper-engineering genius behind The Christmas Alphabet
and The Wizard of OZ - A Commemorative Pop-Up.

Sites about Particular Authors or Illustrators

Dr. Seuss's Seussville

A fun site about the classic author illustrator, hosted by his American Publisher, Random House

Roald Dahl

There's an awful lot to see here and Dahl fans are sure to find something of interest.

The World of Froud

An attractively designed site featuring the work of the illustrator and concept designer behind such films as "Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth". This is yet another British author / illustrator site set up by an American publisher.

Crockett Johnson

A site about the American writer / illustrator / cartoonist who created "Harold and the Purple Crayon" and the "Barnaby" strip cartoon.

Sites about a Particular Book or Series

Asterix

The Official Web site for the indomitable Gaul.
There's lots to see, including a step by step guide showing how Uderzo does his illustrations.

Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" Series

A stylish site, set up by Pullman's American publisher to promote Philip Pullman's excellent 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. The site features some exclusive background reading, such as a guide to reading the Alethiometer.

The series's fan site Bridge to the Stars is also worth a look.
