Summer 2001

The Summer 2001 rail race is promising to be the best meeting yet, and will be held at Abergavenny, the home of the track on the 22nd of July 2001. The track is now computer timed to 1/1000 of a second and has a starting gantry and lights. The main rail race is a straight forward timed section race, with the overall winner being the person who covers the most laps in the allotted time.

Media coverage of this event should surpass last year's incredible effort, with the event covered by most of the car magazines and two television programmes featuring it.

This year's event will include a celebration of the Monzanapolis races which took place at Monza in 1957 and 1958, in which the Europeans took on the Americans.

In the 1957 event the works Jaguars were taken from Le Mans (which had been held a week before) to the event where they finished 4th, 5th and 6th. Unfortunately, their gearing was not suitable for a high speed banked track event having been set up for the Le Mans circuit.

The following year the Europeans were far better represented, with D-type Jaguars, A single seater Jaguar with a Lister chassis, Stirling Moss' Maserati, a Ferrari 4.2 litre V12 and a 3 litre V6. The 500 mile race was broken into three heats. The top qualifyer was Luigi Musso. The overall winner was Jim Rathman, followed by Jim Bryan in second. Third place was a joint effort between Luigi Musso, Mike Hawthorne and Phil Hill, who each drove a heat in the Ferrari.

A seperate rail race from the main competition is being organised for cars that qualify for this event. At this year's event a routed wooden slot car track will be used for the slot car races, provided by Sean Fothersgill. An HO track will be present, courtesy of Nick Sismey of DHORC.

Other attractions are also in the pipeline to broaden the appeal of the event, including a full size racing car being demonstrated.
