MILLICHEN AREA - SIGHTINGS 2008       

Please note, these reports concentrate on 'red data' bird species; wetland bird counts and unusual faunal

records or counts for the area; they do not constitute a complete data base of all species recorded.

3/4 Tree Sparrow, 12 House Sparrow, 10 Reed Bunting, 10 Yellowhammer and 20 Starling at West

Millichen Farm.

25 House Sparrow and 15 Starling at East Millichen Farm.

Other birds seen in the Millichen area included 29 Greylag Geese (overhead), 3 Mallard, 1 Snipe, 2 Pied

Wagtail, 1 Song Thrush, 30+ Redwing, 6 Fieldfare, 2 Stonechat, 2 Raven, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and

20 Collared Dove.

House Sparrows, 1 or 2 Reed Buntings and a Stonechat at West Millichen Farm.

Several Grey Heron and Mallard, a flock of Lapwings, 1 Snipe, 1 Water Rail, and several Mistle Thrushes,

Fieldfare, Redwing and many Starlings at Millichen Flood (including the ditches).

Other birds recorded in the Millichen area included 4 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel and 1 Song Thrush.

Roe Deer were also seen.

The next two sets of records show how numbers and species change throughout the day. There is

no such thing as 'good time' to visit; just make sure you 'make time' to visit!

 

8 December 2008

3 Tree Sparrow, c.15 House Sparrow, 14 Common Gull and 7 Black-headed Gull at West Millichen Farm.

2 Grey Heron, 10 Mallard, 1 Woodcock (flushed from ditch), 1 Buzzard, 1 Raven, 2 Meadow Pipit,

2 Fieldfare, 25 Linnet (plus c40 in the Bird crop field) and 1 Reed Bunting at Millichen Flood.

c.25 House Sparrow and 3 Collared Dove at East Millichen Farm.

3 Fieldfare at Millichen Steadings.

Also 3 Roe Deer and 1 Brown Hare recorded in the Millichen area.

Sightings recorded between 1140-1255 hrs.

8 December 2008

2 Tree Sparrows, 11 House Sparrows, 21 Starlings and 1 Reed Bunting at West Millichen Farm.

30 House Sparrows, 3 Linnets, 15 Starlings  and a mixed flock of around 70 birds, including Chaffinches,

Yellowhammers and Reed Buntings, feeding around East Millichen Farm.

3 Reed Buntings and 1 Yellowhammer at Millichen Steadings.

Also 1 Grey Heron, 13 Mallard, 43 Lapwings, 1 Peregrine, 2 Buzzards, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Stonechat,

2 Mistle Thrushes, 1 Song Thrush, 18 Fieldfares and 5 Goldfinches  around the Millichen area.

In total, 30 different bird species and 15 Roe Deer recorded in the Millichen area.

Sightings recorded between 0900-1045hrs.

Red Data Species:  c.80 Lapwing, 1 Skylark, 2 Reed Bunting, various House Sparrows and 2 Starling.

Wetland birds: 1 Grey Heron, 14 Mallard, 2 Snipe, 10 Black-headed Gull and 30 Common Gull.

Other records included: 1 Buzzard (heard), several Stock Dove, 8 Fieldfare and  3 Mistle Thrush.

In total, at least 23 different bird species and 7 Roe Deer recorded in the Millichen area.

1 Grey Heron, 9 Mallard, 14 Lapwing and two flocks of Linnets at Millichen Flood.

1 Tree Sparrow, 2 Yellowhammer, 4 House Sparrow, 1 Song Thrush, 4 Fieldfare, 1 Stonechat, 1 Goldcrest

and 1 Goldfinch at West Millichen Farm.

20+  House Sparrows at East Millichen Farm.

Other species included: 40+ Starlings and 6+ Mistle Thrushes.

2 Greylag Goose, 3 Pink-footed Goose. 5 Grey Heron, 1 Curlew, 110 Fieldfare, 1 Grey Wagtail,

150 Linnet, 8 Chaffinch  and 2 Reed Bunting at Millichen Flood (including the bird crop field).

10 House Sparrow, 2 Chaffinch and 1 Yellowhammer at the feeding station at West Millichen Farm.

3 Goldfinch at Millichen Steadings.

10 Starling, c.25 House Sparrow and 35 Linnet (in stubble north of flood) at East Millichen Farm

Also 8 Roe Deer in the Millichen area.

17 November 2008        

Red Data Species: 4 Tree Sparrows, 4 Reed Buntings, 3 Yellowhammers, 15 House Sparrows and 8 Starlings.

Other records included: 1 Kestrel, c100 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing, 3 Mistle Thrush and 22 Chaffinches.

In total, at least 21 different bird species and 14 Roe Deer recorded in the Millichen area.

12 House Sparrows at West Millichen Farm.

Other records of note: around 100 Linnets, 2 Greylag Geese, 120 Lapwings,  1 Curlew, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Kestrel,

2 Meadow Pipits, 2 Stonechats, 2 Stock Doves, 50 Fieldfares and 1 Redwing.

2 Mistle Thrush, 10 Starling and c15 House Sparrow at West Millichen Farm.

In total, 28 different bird species and 12 Roe Deer recorded in the Millichen area.

Red Data Bird species - c.50 Lapwing, 14 House Sparrow, 32 Linnet and c.60 Starling.

Wetland Birds:  3 Grey Heron, 7 Greylag Geese, c.120 Pink-footed Geese and 50+ Mallard.

Other records of note: 1 Stonechat, 10+ Pied Wagtails and 2 Mistle Thrush.

1 Roe Deer, 1 Red Fox  and a mole (newly dead on the road) also in the Millichen area.

A short visit, mainly scanning from the 'car park' at West Millichen, resulted in the following sightings:

Red Data Bird species - 15 Lapwing, 1 Yellowhammer, 5 Reed Buntings, 30+ House Sparrows,

and 20+ Starlings.

Wetland Birds: 2 Grey Heron, 52 Greylag Geese, 27 Wigeon, c40 Mallard, c5 Teal and 4 species of gull

(all on the Flood).

Summer Migrants: 2 late Swallows.

Raptors: 1 Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrels.

Other records of note: 2 Stonechat, c.15 Goldfinch, 1 Grey Wagtail and at least 32 Pied Wagtails.

In total, 28 different bird species recorded in the Millichen area.

Sightings recorded between 09.25-09.55hrs.

and 1 Herring Gull.

Also 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 7 Pied Wagtails,  1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Collared Doves, 4 Stock Doves, 2 Meadow Pipits,

2 Stonechats and 1 Goldfinch.

Altogether, 28 different bird species and 5 Roe Deer recorded in the Millichen area.

The following counts cover the whole of the Millichen area:

Red Data Bird species - 6 Tree Sparrows,  2 Yellowhammers, 1 Reed Bunting, c.35 House Sparrows,

6 Linnet and 6 Starlings.

Wetland Birds: 1 Grey Heron, 2 Greylag Geese, 23 Teal, 19 Black-tailed Godwits and 4 species of gull

(all on the Flood).

Summer Migrants: c.50 Swallows, 3 House Martins, 4 Whitethroat and 1 Willow Warbler.

Raptors: 1 Peregrine (causing 15 of the Godwits to fly off), 3 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk and 1 Kestrel.

Other records of note: 2 Raven, 5 Stonechat, 10 Goldfinch, 1 Stock Dove and at least 41 Collared Doves.

There was a good variety of young birds around suggesting that the breeding season had not been too bad.

Also there were literally 100s of corvids and Woodpigeons present.

In total, 37 different bird species recorded in the Millichen area.

With birds flying between various count areas, the following counts cover the whole of the Millichen area:

Red Data Bird species - 6 Tree Sparrows including 2 young birds,  3 Yellowhammers, 1 Reed Bunting,

an impressive 90 House Sparrows including young birds and 14 Starlings.

Wetland Birds: 54 Greylag Geese and 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Summer Migrants: 3 Swifts, 11 Swallows and 2 House Martins.

Other records of note: 1 Raven, 1 Stonechat and at least 51 Collared Doves.

In total, 22 different bird species recorded in the Millichen area.

Also in the Millichen area: 2 Roe Deer and 3 Meadow Brown butterflies.

Sightings recorded between 11.20-1310hrs.

Saturday 14 June 2008

The highlight of the day, if not the year, was an Osprey drifting over Millichen at c10.30hrs and eventuall moving

off north. If that wasn't enough there were also 3 Ravens present - probably the pair and offspring from the first

successful breeding attempt for over 100 years in the city.

With birds flying between various count areas and in order not to draw attention to the location of breeding

birds, the following counts cover the whole of the Millichen area:

Red Data Bird species - 5 Tree Sparrows including a pair mating plus 2 young birds,  3 Yellowhammers, 4 male Reed

Buntings, 46 House Sparrows, 1 Skylark, 2 Linnets and 33 Starlings.

Wetland Birds: 1 Mallard, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Black-headed Gull and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Summer Migrants: 17 Swifts, 3 Sand Martins, 14 Swallows, 3 House Martins, 1 Sedge Warbler and 2 Whitethroat.

Other records of note: 2 Stonechat and at least one nestbox being used by Blue Tits.

In total, 34 different bird species recorded in the Millichen area.

Also in the Millichen area: 2 Roe Deer.

at East Millichen Farm. Close by, around 50 Greylag and 30 Pink-footed Geese feeding close to the road.       

Approximately 22 Tree Sparrows,  20 Yellowhammers, 6 Reed Buntings and 11 House Sparrows at West Millichen

Farm (feeding station).

Also in the Millichen area, 1 Kestrel, 2 Pheasants, 2 Oystercatchers, 2 Song Thrush and a flock of Fieldfares.

Two reports that show the diversity and ever changing range of species to be found.

 

352 Greylag Geese, 40 Black Headed Gull, 7 Common Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 4 Herring Gull,

1 Curlew and 60 Fieldfare at Millichen Flood.

c70 Linnet in stubble field at East Millichen Farm.

12 Fieldfare at Millichen Steadings.

5 Grey Partridge, 12 Tree Sparrows, c30 House Sparrows, 5 Reed Buntings, 12 Starlings and a mixed

flock of around 70 Linnet with Twite (at least 4) around East Millichen Farm.

Also in the Millichen area c385 Greylag Geese, 20 Pied Wagtails, 1 Kestrel and 1 Buzzard.

Also 1 Fox and 14 Roe Deer.
Sightings recorded between 1015-1315 hrs.

7+ Tree Sparrows, c10 House Sparrows and 6+ Reed Buntings at West Millichen Farm.

2 Grey Heron, 2 Stonechat, 1 Kestrel and 34+ Pied Wagtails at Millichen Flood.

250+ Greylag Geese and c30 House Sparrows at East Millichen Farm.

1 Yellowhammer, c50 Starlings, c50 Fieldfare, c10 Redwing, 1 Mistle Thrush and 1 Grey Wagtail at

Millichen Steadings.

The above are minimum counts undertaken over a 1 hour period (c10.30-11.30am) as part of a Glasgow RSPB

Local Group sponsored bird watch - in total, 33 species seen in the Millichen area.

2 Herring Gull  at Millichen Flood.  

Also of interest in the Millichen area: 12 Tree Sparrows, 22 House Sparrows, 12 Reed Buntings,

10 Yellowhammers, 1 Skylark, 44 Starlings, 57 Fieldfare, 76 Redwing, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Pied Wagtail,

28 Chaffinches and 5 Goldfinches.

In total 30 bird species recorded in the Millichen area.

71 Lapwing (circling over site), 2 Grey Herons, 1 Jack Snipe (in ditch), 82 Black-headed Gulls, 13 Common Gull,

5 Herring Gull, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 Kestrel, 2 Buzzard, 14 Meadow Pipit, 4 Grey Wagtail, 7 Pied Wagtail,

6 Skylark (flying over) and 6 Reed Bunting at Millichen Flood (flood completely frozen).

9 Tree Sparrows,  6 House Sparrows, 23 Reed Buntings, 5 Yellowhammer, 1 Pheasant, and 20+ Chaffinch at

West Millichen Farm.

30 House Sparrows, 10 Skylarks, 40 Starlings, 2 Song Thrush, 23 Redwing, 10+ Blackbirds,  3 Stock Doves and

2 Goldfinches at East Millichen Farm.

Sightings recorded between 11.20-13.10 hrs

Around 30 Greylag Geese at Millichen Flood.

18 House Sparrows, c15 Reed Buntings and c10Yellowhammers at West Millichen Farm.

40 House Sparrows at East Millichen Farm.

Also of interest in the Millichen area: 1 Buzzard, 2 Kestrels, 30  Fieldfare, 20 Redwing and 10 Starlings. 

6 Roe Deer were also seen.

Sightings recorded over a 2 hour period in the morning.

21 Greylag Geese, 9 Reed Buntings, and 20 Pied Wagtails at Millichen Flood.

5 Tree Sparrows, 15 House Sparrows, 2 Yellowhammers, 3 Reed Buntings and 23 Starlings, at West Millichen Farm.

26 Tree Sparrows and c30 House Sparrows at East Millichen Farm. Also c80 Linnets and 30 Skylarks flying around

fields close to the farm.

In addition, 2 Buzzards, 1 Kestrel, 1 Sparrowhawk, 101 Black Headed Gulls, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Mistle Thrush,

8 Redwings, 120 Fieldfares and 1 Stonechat in the Millichen area. Also 3 Roe Deer and 1 Red Fox present.

In total 38 bird species recorded in the Millichen area between 0910-1200 hrs.
