                      Town of the Pied Piper

  The Tale

When children are very young most are introduced to and are fascinated by fairy tails, the Legend of the Pied Piper is no exception. Most fairy tails are exactly that, just fairy tails there is nothing to prove or disprove that there is any truth to these wonderful stories.

The Legend of the Pied Piper took place in the year 1284 when 130 children from a town called Hameln was piped away by an old man. The old man with the children left the town through Hameln`s East Gate to disappear onto a cave in the mountain, never to be seen again. This old man was given the name "The Pied Piper".

Well what do you think!!  was it Legend?  or was it true??

This  fascinating event seemingly took place 722 years ago but even today some facts exist  that provide some credence to this remarkable legend.

1.    There is a town called Hameln situated in one of the loveliest areas of Germany

2.    Just outside Hameln there is a beautiful hill / mountain to where it is claimed the children were taken.

3.    The powerful river Weser exists, which is where the Pied Piper drowned the rats.

4.    There was an East Gate, probably demolished in 1880.

5.    1984 was the 700 year Anniversary of the Pied Piper Legend, this brought a response from all over the world.

6.    Even now, no real rats are to be found in Hameln.

What do you think!!!!!   TRUE or FALSE.

On Sundays in Summer, amateur performers act out the story of the Pied Piper (Rattenfangersage) in colorful costumes on the terrace in front of  the rebuilt Town Hall.

Visitors go to the town especially to see these performances

My wife was born in Hameln and we have visited this exciting town many times, we can vouch that all of the above is fact, but the truth of the Legend will never be known.

FORTIFICATION

In 1237 Hameln possessed fortifications around the town, this was razed on the order of Napoleon early in 1808,  together with most of the multi-tower town wall which was erected around 1300. It is likely that the East Gate was destroyed at this time.

  HAMELN OLD TOWN

During World War Two Hameln Old Town suffered much damage and most of the historic buildings were seriously damaged or destroyed.
Old Town describes the very center of Hameln where the oldest and most important historical buildings stand, the buildings around the outside of the Old Town are of later generations, more modern in design and demonstrate the expansion of the town.

In 1967  the Town Council took the decision to renovate the Old Town, this work was very carefully and skilfully carried out, this project took over 23 years to complete. The properties are now a collection of the oldest habitual buildings in the world and the Old Town is a most wonderful exciting place to visit.

Hamleln  (Hamlin in English) -- a name with a good ring to it, is a town which has been able to maintain  it`s century old character despite a bold ubran renewal program. It is an active center for a region of  almost 200,000 inhabitants.

I hope in this brief visit to Hameln  I have managed to generate your interest in the town , you can be sure, there is much more to Hameln than can be put into a few pages or even a few books, the atmosphere in this Pied Piper town is unique and a visit is worthwhile.
