Evening Gazette Article - 30th June 2010.
A special trust fund set up in memory of a youngster who died aged just 10 has received a boost after it was picked to be Sainsbury’s Yarm’s chosen charity for the second year running.
Abbie’s Love was set up three years ago by parents Richard and Tracy Clarke after they lost their beloved daughter Abbie to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Tracy and Richard visited the store on Yarm High Street last week where staff handed over £4,000 raised over the past year. Cash raised in Abbie’s name goes towards research into epilepsy, raising awareness of the condition, as well as to a support group and towards medical equipment. Now Sainsbury’s customers have voted for Abbie’s Love to be the charity of the year for a second year.
Richard said: “For such a big store to take on such a small local charity, it’s boosted our profile no end. “Really, it’s not just £4,000 we’ve got through them, it’s £8,000, because Mishy Holt heard about us because of Sainsbury’s.”
The Gazette told earlier this month how Yarm mum Mishy raised £4,000 in memory of her son Josh, who tragically died from the same condition as Abbie, at the age of just 20. She learned about the charity through the store. Sainsbury’s store trainer Julie Scott, who co-ordinates the supermarket’s charity efforts, met with Richard and Tracy along with other staff and manager Steve Topham to hand over the cheque. Julie said: “We give our customers and colleagues the chance to choose a new charity every year. This year when it came to nominations 98% of them voted for Abbie’s Love again.”
Wish token results 2009: This year we managed to collect 120,874, which gave us a £1,182.09 share of the prize money! Thank you to everyone who took part.
