If you have not used C68 for QDOS before, then the following summarises the
minimum hardware requirements:
- Expanded QL with 640Kb of memory or more. This will be enough to run
the system as long as you do not try to compiler really large programs.
You can also use any other hardware that can emulate a QL as long as
it meets this memory requirement while in QDOS compatible mode.
- 2 x 720Kb floppy drive or better. The system can be run with a twin floppy
system, but it can be a bit tedious as you may have to swap disks at quite
frequent intervals. If the drives are HD (1.44Mb) or ED (3.2Mb) then you
will be much more comfortable.
Serious users are recommended to use a hard disk as this allows them to keep
all of the C68 system on-line simultaneously. When installed to a hard
disk, then the C68 system will use up about 2Mb for the binaries,
and another 1.5Mb for the documentation.
The operating system can be any QDOS compatible operating system. The following have
all been validated:
- QDOS. As far as I know all hardware platforms that have ever run QDOS can
run the system. Ones that have been tested include:
- The original QL
- Atari ST with the Futura QL emulator
- Atari ST with the QVME emulator
- Amiga with the QL emulator
- Linux with the UQLX QL Emulator
- Apple Mac with Q-Emulator
- PC with the QLAY Emulator
- Minerva
- SMS/2 on the Atari ST
- SMSQ on the QXL
- SMSQ/E
This includes all variants that currently exist:
- Gold Card and Super Gold Card
- Atari ST with QL emulator hardware or QVME
- QPC
- QXL
The SMSQ/E environment is the one that is recommended for serious users.
The hardware requirement of programs compiled with C68 vary according to what
the program does. Unless the programmer deliberately does something that is
specific to a particular hardware requirement, then you can expected C68 compiled
programs to run on all the same environments that C68 itself runs on.
