SIMON PETERS -An Evening of
Clairvoyance - a comparison, critique and editorial |

I
arrived almost an hour early for the evening, and was directed to the room
hired by The Simon Peters Company, where I joined a short queue. Inside
the door I discovered two ladies at trestle tables taking the money, and
behind them stood a slim man, whom I took to be his manager. I chose my
seat carefully and watched with interest as around two hundred and fifty
people, mainly female, took their places. I didn't expect to see Simon
Peters yet as I had been told he liked to meditate prior to a
demonstration.
On several occasions the slim man left his place behind the table, and walked down an aisle, between the seats, to the platform. There he would apparently adjust something, and return to his position by the door. On one occasion he helped a lady in a wheelchair to a position towards the front of the audience, removing a chair to make room for her. Once again he made his way through the audience to the platform, and this time introduced himself - it was Simon Peters. by Angela |
I arrived at the venue at
around 7:15 with the evening of clairvoyance due to start at 7:30. As I
walked into the room through the door at the back right hand corner, there
was a small table with two people sat behind it. The first person, who I
recognised to be Simon Peters, asked if I had booked and asked for my
name, and proceeded to draw a line through something on his list. I was
then asked by the person sitting next to him (who I later found out was
called Colin) for twenty pounds for the seats,. I paid and was given my
tickets.
The seats were facing the opposite way towards the stage, where there was various electrical equipment on a table with speakers on either side, and Enya was playing through them. This music was fairly loud before the start, although it got quieter when Simon was channelling. The chairs for the evening where separated into three sections, the one closest the door was six rows deep and five seats across, then there was a middle row seven rows deep and ten seats across and finally another row seven rows deep and five seats across towards the bar area, there was also a few tables in front of the bar. I chose a seat in the second to back row on the right side near the door. On all the seats was a flyer for Simon Peters and a second one with all the dates for the next month or so of his shows. by Matt |

Quotes from Chester introduction |
Quotes from Rochdale introduction |
“There was a lady with me who had just lost her husband …” |
"... a lady came
into bereavement counselling who had lost her |
“I mean, bear in mind she’s 80 years old – ‘tell her I love her’. With all
respect, she’s 80…” |
“… this lady that came to see me was 82 years old… “ |
“Her jaw just fell open, and her legs buckled and she hit the floor. I ran round the desk and I picked her up.” |
“Do you know
what she said? "Yeeesss", and then she went a little bit white …” |
“Just this morning I put the rock in the cupboard because I couldn’t bear to look at it any more.” |
“… just a couple
of days before she had put a piece of rock that he'd brought in all those
years earlier when he had proposed marriage into the airing cupboard” |
But a year
earlier, in Rochdale, |
“… just two
weeks before she had put it in the cupboard because she could not bear to
look at it anymore.” |
| “Come on, Peter. I call my spiritual guide Peter – it might not be Peter, but I call him Peter. I hope he doesn’t mind” | “… you'll hear me talking to Peter and Simon, which are the guides that work with me just ignore me when I do that." | ||
'Possessed me' is a very strange expression for someone who claims to love God to use. In the Christian churches a person is 'possessed' only by demons. This is the Roman Catholic viewpoint, and this that of the Anglican Church.
"You'll have to refresh my memory when they've possessed me, because I won't remember what I've said," |
The story of the old lady and the rock is one which ‘Simon Peters’ appears to tell two or three times a week. If, as he claims, it’s true, why does it vary with the telling?

A young lad who took his own life
SP Please don’t cry. WOMAN It’s not that – I can’t believe it. SP ‘I can’t believe I went and left you...’ This is what he’s saying.. WOMAN But it’s not me ...
A gentleman blown up in
Bosnia
An older gentleman, a father. ADDITIONAL NOTE BY ANGELA:
At
least one reading has been left out of the tape. There was an
older lady sitting on her own in an aisle seat in front of me. The lady said that the date meant nothing to her, at which point Simon Peters ‘split’ the date into a fifteen, which wasn’t necessarily a date, and the month of May. He said she would be busy in May, and she agreed. I think she said her Ruby Wedding anniversary had been in 2004.
SP: I see a young man here, he's quite young, alright?
SP: You alright? The poor woman was left in floods of
tears as the show went on. Any self-respecting psychologist should surely have known
better than to just leave someone in such a way. |

when talking about his
mediumship - his 'other job' |
For at least the first year of his personal appearances, ‘Simon Peters’ constantly referred to his other profession of ‘psychotherapy / psychology’ in order to convince his audience that he is genuine, or to use his own word,
'honest', in his mediumship. |
His website:
“…at 21 years old [I] became qualified as a Psychotherapist and Analyst.”
| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |||
At Chester:
"Being a psychologist..."
"I am a psychologist; I’m a psychotherapist and an analyst."
"Look, at the end of the day I’m a psychologist; I aren’t here to con you."
"I earn an absolute fortune as a psychotherapist in private practice, working two days a week. I flew my aeroplane five days a week. I mean it’s seventy-five quid a session. I only have to work two days a week, I only have to see fourteen, fifteen people, and I’m on one and a half grand. That’s me. " |
| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |||
At Rochdale: |
"I'm actually a psychotherapist and I'm honest.
"In layman's terms I'm a psychologist"

The facts about psychology, psychotherapy, and 'Simon Peters'
“I’m a
psychologist”.
From the website of the British Psychological Society:
| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | ||
“I’m a psychotherapist”.
'Simon Peters' lied to me in that email, as I discovered when I put the question to Rob Kelly of the IAH. |
Rob Kelly, the man who *is* the IAH and the Hypnotherapy Control Board has informed me that IAH Membership does NOT infer any title other than Member of The International Association of Hypnoanalysts (MIAH).
He also tells me that
the HCB Diploma (the main qualification necessary for IAH Membership) does
not qualify someone as a psychologist either, as 'psychologist' is a
protected title. |
It would appear that ‘Simon Peters’ was also in
breach
5. Never to use their Membership of the Association as any form of accreditation for any commercial activity (other than the establishment of a bona fide Private Practice in Hypnotherapy) nor yet use their Membership to lend support to any beliefs pertaining to para-psychical matters (including all matters pertaining to the paranormal) and never to use Membership of the Association as any form of accreditation for the teaching in the subject of Hypnosis carried out by any category of Member (unless all details of such teaching have been submitted to and approved by the Council of Management). Provided always that nothing in this Clause shall prohibit any Member concerning themselves with the paranormal or with instruction in Hypnotherapy on the understanding that their Membership of the Association is not referred to in any discussion or correspondence and specifically any publicity material referring to such interests.
Rob Kelly confirmed that 'going into mediumship' would go against the IAH Membership Criteria. He also informed me that 'Simon Peters' had not been a member of IAH for some time, and would be requiring him to remove all references to the IAH from his website but at the time of writing they are still there. |

“trained at the Royal London, with prof. Mike Yappco. For certificates in hypno-anaesthesia.”
However, Dr Michael D. Yapko, Clinical Psychologist, of California, states in an email to Emma Gee:
“The term hypno-anaesthesia is not one that I use. The one and only time I ever did a course on the use of hypnosis on pain management was about 7 or 8 years ago. I provided a one day workshop at the Royal Society of Medicine. I have no recall for having done any other workshops on the same subject in London.
I hope this helps.” |

So what other
qualifications does ‘Simon Peters’ hold? |
'Simon Peters' informs me that I have attributed two sets of letters after his name incorrectly. If that is the case, I apologise. However, I am unable to amend this section due to his refusal to provide the correct meanings.
Rob Kelly of the IAH informs me that he has no idea what these initials could stand for.
One wonders whether they have ever existed.

Is 'Simon Peters' better
qualified as a medium |
"I had seen Derek Acorah on TV and thought he might be able to help me understand what was happening, so in March 2003 I went to see him at one of his live shows in Leeds. I waited until the show was over and joined the end of the queue to meet him. "
When the owner of
this website
published
his article about Simon Peters being a plant for Derek Acorah at York, Gwen
Johnson, Acorah's wife and manager, emailed him on 8th February 2005.
He forwarded the email to several people, including me. In it,
Mrs Johnson says:
Yet just four weeks later, 'Simon Peters' appears alongside Acorah in Most Haunted Live.
He goes on to describe how Derek Acorah told him " Spirit are with you from the highest Spirit realms – Jesus Christ himself is with you.”
It seems he also went backstage to see Acorah after the show. |
And this is where their stories
diverge sharply.
"... but I said I would screen test for it on the condition
they asked Derek Acorah if he thinks I’m ready for such a thing. “Tell
Derek I was the man at York who he gave the message to a couple of weeks
ago and if Derek remembers me and thinks I am not too inexperienced, I
will screen test for the show”.
The phone rang an hour later, it was Most Haunted again. “Derek says yes and says it would be hard to forget that message at York.” I did the screen test for the programme and Mr Will Hanrahan welcomed me aboard the Most Haunted team." |
"Derek Acorah, Medium of "Most Haunted" and one of the UK’s leading international mediums, recommended Simon as one of the mediums on the Most Haunted programme and calls Simon “a truly gifted medium”..." |
Does 'Simon Peters' use his brief and undistinguished appearance on Most Haunted Live in all his advertising to draw an audience?
To help you make up your own mind, take a look at this clip** of him in rehearsal during the afternoon, several hours before the programme, just after watching the now-infamous "Mary loves Dick" clip.
During his first year of his 'Evenings of
Clairvoyance', did he use his 'other profession'
in an attempt to convince audiences of his mediumistic abilities?
Was he recommended for Most Haunted by Acorah?
If not, why would Hanrahan employ him?
Just how likely is it that
Acorah would have done so without his
wife/manager knowing?
Has Acorah back-tracked on his endorsement of
'Simon Peters'?
Or could it be that Acorah and 'Peters' have been
acquaintances, if not friends, since their meeting in March 2003?
This possibility leads right back to the question "Was 'Simon Peters' a
plant at Acorah's show in York, in December 2003 either unwittingly, or as
willing participant?" Only two people know the truth, but
would either be believed now? As ever, make up your own mind.
