Icon Sauron

“In the black abyss there appeared a single Eye that slowly grew, until it filled nearly all the Mirror. So terrible was it that Frodo stood rooted, unable to cry out or to withdraw his gaze. The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing.” (Lord of the Rings Book II Chapter 7).

Sauron was one of the Maiar, who existed before Middle-Earth was created. He is great in evil, and the most powerful creature still dwelling in Middle-Earth. He appears only as a great Eye, unable any longer to appear fair to Elves or Men.

Sauron was originally the lieutenant of Morgoth, the original Dark Lord. After the end of the First Age, when Morgoth was utterly defeated, he remained in Middle-Earth and soon fell back into evil. Since being defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at the end of the Second Age, he has been steadily regrowing, but has not yet revealed himself openly, nor retaken his old fortresses in Mordor, hiding still in the guise of the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.
