Icon Rohan

“Their horses were of great stature, strong and clean-limbed; their grey coats glistened, their long tails flowed in the wind, their manes were braided on their proud necks. The Men that rode them matched them well: tall and long-limbed; their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen. In their hands were tall spears of ash, painted shields were slung at their backs, long swords were at their belts, their burnished shirts of mail hung down upon their knees.” (Lord of the Rings Book III Chapter 2).

Rohan is the home of the Rohirrim, who call themselves the Eorlingas. They are descended from the Men of Rhovanion, and are thus distant kin to the descendants of the Númenoreans in Gondor. They are masters of horses, which thrive in the extensive pastures of Rohan. They are honest and wise, but rely more on songs than books to maintain their history.

Originally from the area of the Gladden River, the Éothéod moved north to the sources of the Anduin c TA 2000. In TA 2510, Cirion, then Steward of Gondor, appealed to their leader Eorl the Young for aid against an invasion of Easterlings. Eorl and his cavalry won the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, and was rewarded with that part of Gondor called Calenardhon, which then became Rohan.
