Icon Elves

“Before long the Elves came down into the valley. They passed slowly, and the hobbits could see the starlight glimmering on their hair and in their eyes. They bore no lights, yet as they walked a shimmer, like the light of the moon above the rim of the hills before it rises, seemed to fall about their feet.” (Lord of the Rings Book I Chapter 3).

The Elves are an ancient race, the Elder Children of Ilúvatar, the Creator of the World. They are immortal, but as the Ages of Middle-Earth draw on, they are fading or growing weary and leaving to sail West to the Undying Lands of Valinor. A substantial number still remain, growing more and more distant from the other Peoples of Middle-Earth. They are quick and light-footed, and have exceptional senses, being able to see and hear beyond the ability of Men.

In TA 2750, the remaining Elves in the North-West of Middle-Earth live in four separate realms. The Grey Havens are situated far to the West, and are mostly concerned with the Sea. Most of the remaining High Elves live in Rivendell, at the western end of the High Pass through the Misty Mountains, although many are nomadic. Two Kingdoms of Silvan Elves still exist, in the woods of Lothlórien (the Dreamflower) and the Woodland Realm of northern Mirkwood.
