Icon Dwarves

“But a small dark figure that none had observed sprang out of the shadows and gave a hoarse shout: Baruk Khazád! Khazád ai-ménu! An axe swung and swept back. Two Orcs fell headless.” (Lord of the Rings Book III Chapter 7).

The Dwarves are a unique race in Middle-Earth; created by Aulë the Vala in the dim reaches of pre-history, they are secretive but have a strong sense of honour. They are great miners (living mostly underground) and smiths, and forge better arms, tools, and armour than any other race.

In TA 1980, the Balrog known as Durin's Bane killed the greatest King of the Dwarves, Durin VI, in Khazad-Dûm, and it has since become an evil place known as Moria, the Black Pit. The Dwarves of Durin's House still own substantial kingdoms in Erebor (the Lonely Mountain), the Iron Hills, and the Blue Mountains far to the West.
