Installing Spybot 1.4

Assuming you have just installed Spybot for the first time and have selected to run it automatically, you will see the "Legal Stuff" message - click OK.

The next screen advises you to create a backup of your registry.   As it indicates, it is not necessary.   However, it is recommended, just in case anything does go wrong.

The next step of the setup wizard prompts you to search for and download updates.   If you are connected to the Internet, I strongly advise obtaining all the latest updates for the Spybot software.

After this, you should select the Immunize this system option.   This allows Internet Explorer to be safely guarded against the latest malware/spyware threats and is especially recommended.

The last step of the setup wizard offers three options to you; Read Tutorial, Read help file and Start using the program.   Read the helpfiles and tutorials and familiarise yourself and after that, opt to start using Spybot.

Using Spybot 1.4

The main feature of Spybot is Search & Destroy, the section where you can search for and remove malicious entries in your system.

Start by clicking Check for problems to begin the scan of your local machine.   The status bar at the bottom of the window will show the message, "Running Bot Check" which will indicate scanning progress.

After the scan is complete, a list of entries will appear in the main body of the Spybot window.   The entries are normally automatically selected for removal. Click the Fix Selected Problems button and a confirmation dialogue button will appear - Click Yes to confirm.

Another dialogue box will confirm removal of malicious entries, although there are often exceptions which cannot be fixed.   Spybot will then ask if you want to run Spybot on the next startup of your system which is highly recommended in such circumstances.

That is basically all there is to using Spybot - just remember to keep it updated on a regular basis for optimal performance and protection.
