Comms & TCP/IP

IMPORTANT
If the end user has ZoneAlarm installed, have them go into ZoneAlarm Control Center > Program Control, allow full access to everything listed and fully uninstall it.
Ensure before proceeding with the below that the end user has at least one of the following:
- Operating System Installation CD-ROM
- The cab files on hard disk (Win 9x/ME only)
Windows 98/ME
Windows XP
Windows 98/ME
Begin by searching for the cabinet files needed for the rest of this tutorial. They will either be on the Operating Systen CD-ROM or in the following location:
C:\WINDOWS\CABS
Once located, make a note of this and follow these instructions:
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
- Double left click Network
- Remove TCP/IP, Adapter & Client for Microsoft Networks
- Remove anything else present in the list
At this point, press OK to begin the reinstallation of Network Components from the *.cab files. After the files have been copied, select No as we do not wish to restart the computer.
Go back into the Control Panel as explained above and double left on Add/Remove Programs. Click onto the Windows Setup, untick Communications and press OK but do not restart the computer.
Click on Start > Run > and type in the following:
regedit
Make sure you back up the registry before making chages to it. To do this, click File > Export Registry, call it regbackup or something similar and save to the desktop for easy access.
Remove the following keys:
Windows 98
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\RemoteAccess
Windows ME
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\RemoteAccess
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Winsock
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Winsock2
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VXD\AFVXD
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VXD\DHCP
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VXD\MSTCP
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VXD\Winsock
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VXD\Winsock2
At this point, reboot the system. On the restart of the computer, follow the instructions below:
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
- Double left click Add/Remove Programs
- Click the Windows Setup tab
- Highlight Communications
- Click Details
- Tick Dialup Networking
- Tick Hyperterminal
- Tick Phone Dialer
- Click OK > Apply
Dialup networking will begin to be installed from the *.cab files and you should then restart the computer to finalise the repair of DUN and TCP/IP.
Windows XP
Service Pack 1 and older
- Click Start > Run
- Type in C:\ and press Enter
- Click Tools > Folder Options
- Click the View tab
- Select "Show hidden files and folders"
- Click Apply > OK
This will allow us to view the location of the file nettcpip.inf which is used to reinstall TCP/IP. You can either search for it by clicking Search > Files or Folders or by:
- Click Start > Run
- Type in C:\Windows\Inf and press Enter
Once you have found the file, make a note of it's directory and click Start > Run, type in regedit and delete the following keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Winsock
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Winsock2
Close the registry editor and go to:
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections or;
Start > Control Panel > Network & Internet Connections > Network Connections
Delete all dialup connections and close down the control panel. Go the the directory where nettcpip is located, right click it and choose Install.
Restart the computer at this point and reconnect using inetwiz or your ISP's dialup software.
Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows XP utilises a new means of repairing Winsock corruption which can normally be caused by malware or incorrect removal of antivirus/firewall software.
To use this facility, open a command terminal and enter the following text:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Then press "OK" - that's all you really need to do. Of course, it is highly recommended that you remove any malware/spyware beforehand.
