Introduction to Hyperterminal

Hyperterminal can be useful in diagnosing whether a connection problem is due to modem/line issues or dial-up networking issue, partly because it bypasses dial-up networking when dialing a POP.

It is also capable of directing commands to the modem (ATi), thereby providing a means of collecting valuable information about the modem properties such as the chipset, BIOS etc.

If you can connect to your POP with Hyperterminal, but can not connect using your dial-up networking connection, chances are you will have to uninstall and reinstall DUN.

Refer to the Windows section and select your Operating System regarding a reinstall of DUN

If garbled characters appear beside the login/password prompt when dialing a POP, it indicates modem problem or misconfigured connection settings.

If a connection cannot be made through hyperterminal -or- dial-up networking, it is likely due to a problem with the modem.

Graphical Interface

To launch Hyperterminal, go to Start > Run and type in the following command:

hypertrm

Enter a name for the connection and click on the following icon:

Click OK.   In the next screenm, fill in the following information:

  1. Country/region: - The country you are dialing from
  2. Area code: - Area Code you are dialing*
  3. Phone number: - Phone number you are dialing*
  4. Connect using: - Modem or other connection device

* e.g. - if your ISP is 0800 123 4567, Area code will be 0800 and Phone number will be 123 4567.

At this point, click OK.   If the number is incorrect, click Modify to make these final adjustments - otherwise, click Dial.

You will now see a status screen similar to that of a normal connectoid.   Once connected, you will need to login.

N.B.  The password will not be shown, or appear to have been entered - this is normal.

Once you have entered your username/password details, the PPP session begins.   You will see your IP Address, the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) and a string of gibberish.

This is normal; click Close to return to the Hyperterminal main window.

DOS Prompt

Click onto start, then Run and enter the following command:

command

This will instigate the command prompt.   Type in the following command:

ECHO ATDT XXXX XXXXXXX > COMµ*

*where µ is the Communication Port modem is attached to

Replace the X's with the number you wish to dial and press Enter.   It will either dial or return an error message.

If you do not get a dial tone, check your modem is installed correctly, plugged in correctly etc. and retry.

Arguably, the largest collection of initialisation commands in the world ever - by Richard Ferris.
