Begin by opening the Norton Anti-Virus application. By clicking onto Options, you can go into the Norton Anti-Virus option menu.
Click onto Live Update and select the Enable Live Update option. Next, click "Apply updates automatically without interrupting me" and then click OK. This will enable Live Update to ensure you have the most up-to-date virus definitions.
2. Startup Scan
This feature is only available in Windows 98 and starts scanning your system on the reboot of your computer.
Startup Norton Anti-Virus and go into your Options menu. In the menu that appears, click onto Norton Anti-Virus and underneath Other, click on Miscellaneous.
Under "What to do at System Startup", check "Scan system files at startup" and click OK. The next time you reboot, your system will be automatically scanned for viruses.
3. Script Blocking
As before, open Norton Anti-Virus and head towards the Options menu. Select Norton Anti-Virus from the next menu and then select Script Blocking.
If it is not checked, select "Enable Script Blocking" and "Ask me what to do" - then click OK.
4. Chat Client Scanning
If one of the following programs has been installed prior to installing Norton Anti-Virus, Instant Messenger scanning is enabled automatically:
- AOL Instant Messenger, version 4.7 or later
- Yahoo! Instant Messenger, version 5.0 or later
- MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger, version 4.6 or later
If you install one of these after installing Norton Anti-Virus, open Norton Anti-Virus as normal and go into the Options menu.
Choose Norton Anti-Virus from the sub-menu and click Instant Messenger. Now select the Chat Client(s) that you installed and click OK.
5. Mail Scanning
Go into the Options menu of Norton Anti-Virus and select Norton Anti-Virus. Click the Email option and under "What to scan", check Incoming and Outgoing mail. Enable Worm Blocking and click Ok.
6. Manual Scanning
Go into the Options menu as normal and navigate to Manual Scan. Under "What items to scan in addition to files" select:
- Memory (Win 98 only)
- Boot records
- Master boot records
Under "File types to scan", click All Files and "Scan within Compressed Files". Select Bloodhound and Enable Bloodhound heuristics.
Select your level of protection. Highest is not recommended as it makes Norton paranoid. Unless you KNOW that you have a virus, stick to Normal and click OK.
Scheduled Scanning
Start up Norton as normal and go into Options. Click on "Scan for Viruses", then "Scan my Computer". Click the icon under Task Schedule and select the time and frequency of scanning then click OK.
