Title : Wonder Project J2
Genre: Communication Adventure
Players: 1
Peripherals Supported: Controller Pak
Wonder project J2 is the second game in the series. The first one was released on the Super Famicom. Wonder project J2 is a game like no other.
The story revolves around a inventor called professor Geppetto who creates a robot child called Josette with the hope of one day her becoming human (pinnochio anyone??) Sadly Geppetto dies before he can teach Josette how to be human. Before he dies he tells Josette about a mysterious person who will guide her after he is gone this person is player San (AKA you).
After the slightly sad intro to the game you are in control of interface robot No 5980 who is a bird designed to let you communicate with Josette. The idea of the game is simple you have to teach Josette how to become human, you do this by teaching her by trial and error.
For example you give Josette a book, because she has never seen a book she has no idea what to do with it, So she may just throw it or even eat it. If she does the wrong action you use the interface robot to tell her she has done something wrong. After a few tries of giving her the book she will try to read it, this is when you use the interface robot to tell her she has done something correct. After a few tries of getting it correct she will tell you she understands and from then on every time you give her a book she will read it instead of eating it etc. This is how most the objectives in the game are obtained.
The graphics are really good considering the game was one of the 1st games released for the N64 the backgrounds are very detailed and full of charm but the best graphics have to go to Josette herself the animation of her is simply stunning she conveys emotions so well that you start to care for her. Sometimes she will run right up to the TV screen and ask you a question looking at you with such interest (^_^). If you scold her too much or make her sad she will sometimes burst into tears or refuse to talk to you and if you make her really happy she will dance and jump around. It's attention to the detail like this that make Josette such a endearing character.
Also the music has to be mentioned as well, the music in this game is really good and the sound effects are spot on. Josette has a range of sounds she makes from her telling you she's understood something or weither its her crying, all of them suit her perfectly.
It's hard to recommend this game for non japanese speakers as there is a lot of Japanese text and without a walkthrough you may never see the end (luckily gamefaqs.com has walkthroughs for it) however for those brave enough to take the risk it's well worth it as you will have never played anything else quite like it, It's still one of my most fave games ever.
