PARRY Family History
Return of Owners of Land 1873
In 1873, a list was compiled, per county, of every person who owned one acre or more of land in England or Wales. The list showed the person's name, address (which was not necessarily where the land was), the extent of their land within the county, and the gross estimated rental from that land. There are 348 PARRYs mentioned in the lists, owning land in 34 counties.
The map below shows the distribution of these PARRYs.
Please note:
- The counties are coloured on the basis of the number of Parrys owning land within them, not on the quantity of land held. Thus one Parry owning 1 acre will cause a county to be coloured the same as one Parry owning 500 acres.
- Anyone owning land in more than one county will be counted within each county (thus 'inflating' the total number of land owners).
- Although effort was made when the lists were compiled to avoid the same person being listed twice within any one county, it is possible, particularly in some of the Welsh counties, that a person is recorded more than once.
- This is a "work in progress" and I hope to carry out further analysis of the information, looking at exactly who owned what and whether any links can be made to other information held (or to be held) on this website. Hopefully I'll also be able to provide a distribution map based on the quantity of land held as well, for comparison to that based on numbers.
My thanks to Archive CD Books for making the Returns of Owners of Land available on cdrom.
