The PARRY One-Name Study
National Probate Index transcripts
Since 1858, all grants of probate and administration in England and Wales have been recorded in the National Probate Index. Transcripts of the entries relating to the surname PARRY will gradually be added to this site.
Please note that, for the majority of years, the full details have only been transcribed for those entries relating to the three counties of Breconshire, Herefordshire, and Monmouthshire. Since I am currently working on extracting census records, it will be some time before further probate information is added to the site. When it is, the priority will be to transcribe the names relating to the period 1924-1971, since this will probably be of more benefit to researchers.
The transcripts were carried out from images taken of the index in Birmingham Library. Some of the images were not fully in focus, which made individual numbers and letters especially difficult to identify. The transcription process was also carried out using voice recognition software. Although every effort has been made to transcribe accurately, you are advised to confirm all information for yourself, since I cannot guarantee that it is free from errors. To find out further information about the probate system, and about how to obtain copies of Wills, visit the Probate service website.
Please note that the original information from which these transcriptions are derived is Crown Copyright.

The Index format
Although the National Index commenced in 1858, the Wills and Administrations proved in the PCC for the period 1853-1857 also appear in the books in Birmingham library, but only as a simple listing of names along with the date and place of the proving. It is therefore more effective to use the PCC index for this date range (via Documents Online on the National Archives site.) I have included the Index details for those dates here just for completeness.
Between 1858-1870, Wills and Administrations appear in separate sections within each year. The basic wording of the index is as follows, although there are often slight variations on individual entries (e.g. the quoting of Marital status usually related to women):
Wills:
[Surname] [First name]. Effects under [value]. [Date of proving]. The Will of [name] late of [address] in the parish of [parish] in the County of [county] [occupation or marital status] deceased who died [date] at [address] was proved at [probate office] by the oath(s) of [name, address, occupation/status and relationship to testator (if any) of executor(s)]
Administrations:
[Surname] [First name]. Effects under [value]. [Date of proving]. Letters of Administration of the Personal Estate and effects of [name] late of [address] in the parish of [parish] in the County of [county] [occupation or marital status] deceased who died [date] at [address] were granted at [probate office] to [name, address, occupation/status and relationship to testator, (if any) of executor] [he/she] having been first sworn.
To avoid duplication of information, the wording will be amended slightly for these pages but should still be understandable.
From 1871, Wills and Administrations are combined in one listing per year, and there were minor changes to the wording.
From 1878, the term "Personal estate" was used instead of "Effects". In 1881 the Personal estate began to be listed precisely, rather than as under a certain value (although, throughout 1881, both versions appear).
From 1892, the format of the entries changed to the following:
[Surname] [First name] of [address] [occupation/marital status] died [date] ["Probate" or "Administration"] [date] to [Name(s) and occupation/marital status of executor(s)] Effects [value].
