Behind the Spanish Lens -cover

Behind the Spanish Lens : Spanish Cinema Under Fascism and Democracy by Peter Besas

Since the death of Generalisimo Francisco Franco, Spanish culture has undergone significant change. And in Spain, as everywhere, social changes are portrayed most dramatically in the movies. Peter Besas's Behind the Spanish Lens : Spanish Cinema under Fascism and Democracy traces the work of those culturally powerful filmmakers who struggled through the years of Fascist rule and found new voices and a worldwide audience under the Socialist government that followed Franco's death.

Spanish Cinema Peter Evans (Editor)

The liveliness and importance of Spanish cinema is increasingly being recognised outside Spain, in film festivals, television exposure, and courses in Institutions of Higher Education. To a large extent this is "auteur" or art-movie cinema. This study concentrates upon that tradition, focusing upon the key films in a period stretching from 1952 to the present day. The term "auteur" has lately fallen into disrepute. The idea - most actively promoted by "Cahiers du Cinema" in the late 1950s and early 1960s - that the director is to a film what an author is to a poem, play or novel, has been subjected to much criticism since structuralist and post-structuralist attacks on the author. But even in pre-"death of the author" days film raised its own specific problems about authorship. Nevertheless, since the initial excitement of French critical theory's provocative assault on conventional notions of authorship, and taking into account specific problems related to the collaborative nature of film-making, attempts have recently been made to reclaim some of the ground lost by the author in these critical and theoretical battles. This volume offers lively readings of films by key directors working to a large extent in the art-movie/"auteurist" field, and aims to strike a balance between representative films, directors and periods. Each chapter concentrates on a single film, discussing it in accessible critical language that takes account both of the distinctiveness of film as an art form and of the material and socio-historical contexts in which each film was made.

Cain on Screen : Contemporary Spanish Cinema by Thomas G. Deveny

This work analyzes contemporary Spanish cinema, focusing on one of its fundamental recurring themes - the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. The films analyzed manifest a broader phenomenon of Spanish culture known as "cainismo", or a fraternal antagonism within the Spanish society. This study follows chronologically the run-up to the war, and the anti-Franco guerilla movement, the misery and the black markets, "moles" who lived clandestine lives, attempts to relive the past, and the long-standing social divisions in Spanish society as they have been portrayed on screen, including fictional and documentary film.

These include classics of 20th-century Spanish literature by authors such as Camilo Jose Cela, Miguel Delibes, and Luis Martin Santos, works by more recent best-selling authors Antonio Munoz Molina, Arturo Perez Reverte and Juan Madrid, and many others. Feminist Discourse and Spanish Cinema by Susan Martin-Marquez

A detailed consideration of women directors working before the Civil War and during Franco's dictatorship, and an exploration the impact of feminism on filmmaking in Spain. Part I focuses on three directors, Rosario Pi, Ana Mariscal and Pilar Miro, whose careers span the history of sound cinema in Spain. The book highlights their struggle to achieve agency within the male-dominated film industry, and draws upon extensive archival research as well as in-depth textual analysis to reveal their negotiation with questions of authorship, female subjectivity and national cinema. Part II explores six films by women and men directors: three each from the Francoist and post-Franco periods that foreground a number of issues of fundamental importance to feminism, from the indoctrination and "performance" of gender, to the fraught effort to reconcile power with sexual pleasure. The Afterword treats the remarkable recent boom in women directors and traces the shift in their work towards the exploration of multiple forms of difference.

Almodovar- Labyrinths of Passion

Almodovar- Labyrinths of Passion by Gwynne Edwards

Pedro Almodovar's provocative films went from international camp status to Academy Award-winning glory in 2000 when All About My Mother won Best Foreign Language Film. The flamboyant Spanish director, known for his outrageous dramedies revolving around passionate Spanish men and strong-willed yet frantic women, is perhaps the most famous European director alive. His most recognized films include Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down!, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Flower of My Secret. Edwards (The Discreet Art of Luis Bunuel) provides a basic introduction to Almodovar's 13 films as well as a few black-and-white stills of his charismatic troupe of actors, such as Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, and Javier Bardem, all now familiar to American audiences. Edwards provides a brief biography of Almodovar in her introduction and ends with a quick summarisation of his entire body of works. In between, she devotes ten well-researched chapters to the director's works and discusses budget, film premieres, reviews both in Spain and internationally, tales about production, plot analysis, cinematography, and the cultural relevance of a film's theme. A handy filmography, bibliography, and index make this book an important, up-to-date study for both devotees and newcomers to Almodovar's over-the-top dramas. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries with film collections.

An Unspeakable Betrayal -cover

An Unspeakable Betrayal by Luis Bunuel, Garrett White (Translator), Jean-Claude Carriere

Although Luis Bunuel, one of the great filmmakers of the 20th century, was notoriously reluctant to discuss his own work in public, he wrote on many subjects over the years. This collection proceeds chronologically, from poetry and short stories written in Bunuel's youth in Spain to an essay written in 1980, not long before his death. Translated into English, the writings offer insights into the filmmaker's life and thought. The earliest pieces came well before Bunuel joined the Surrealist movement in Paris and created the landmark film "Un Chien andalou" with Salvador Dali. Yet these and the early Surrealist writings reveal the inventiveness of the mind that would later create such masterpieces of cinema as "L'Age d'or", "Los olvidados", "Viridiana", "The Milky Way", "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", and "That Obscure Object of Desire". Later writings, which include screenplays and reflections on his own and others' films, illuminate many aspects of Bunuel's career, as well as the ways of thinking and perceiving that underlie his cinematic style. The final essay sums up his view of the world at the end of his life.
