The XVI edition of the Goya Film Awards took place in March 2002 at the Palacio Municipal de Congresos (Madrid). The President of the Academy, Marisa Paredes, attended the ceremony along with Spain's Minister of Culture, Pilar del Castillo. The ceremony was presented by comedy actress Rosa María Sardá. She managed to make the long ceremony enjoyable and even performed a magic number, cutting actor Santiago Segura in half! She also received an award for her role in Sin Vergüenza (Shameless).

Five years after his first success at the Award Ceremony with his Opera Prima Tesis (Thesis), Alejandro Amenábar triumphed again. The Academy agreed with the public and his film Los Otros (The Others) won 8 out of 15 Goya Awards: 3 main prizes and 5 technical. He did not manage, though, to obtain an award he sought after, the award for best original score, which was won by Alberto Iglesias for Lucía y el Sexo (Sex and Lucía). But this was his night and his triumph eclipsed the controversy started by Vicente Aranda, who questioned the nationality of the production of Los Otros and the nominations to Nicole Kidman and the children Alakina Mann and James Bentley.

In his 80th anniversary, Juan Antonio Bardem, head of the Bardem-Muñoz Sampedro clan, was presented the Goya by his very moved siter Pilar and his son Miguel, who could not contain his tears. Apart from the Academy and its president, he dedicated the award to his mum and dad (actors Rafael bardem and matilde Muñoz Sampedro), his wife María and his children, nephews and grand-children who were all present. Bardem congratulated himself for his stubborness to being loyal to himself and said good-bye in his usual way: "Is there a producer in the room? I have a couple of not too expensive projects. I am efficient, I am loyal to the project plans and I only use the material that is budgeted. You better come out now, as I don't have much time to waste".
