NOSTALGIC NIGHT LIFTS 60S SPIRITS
22 May 2006
A damp Sunday night seemed a far cry from the Sixties summer of
love. But it took Grimsby-based band the Imposters just a few great
numbers to set their audience swaying and rolling back the years at
Grimsby Auditorium.
The Ultimate 60s Show with The Imposters, Grimsby Auditorium This
was a really excellent show - a slick and impressive production with
almost 50 of the best hits of the last century and all played live
by four terrific musicians, playing a hometown gig at the peak of
their talents.
Music from the Beatles, Hollies, Cliff, the Shadows, and a dozen
more massive names were not just performed, but given the full
treatment.
Classic outfits, wigs and accents all made for a slightly
tongue-in-cheek but marvellously effective piece of nostalgia where
tapping your feet, swaying and clapping was simply infectious as
tune after tune rolled out of this music machine - and that was just
the first half.
Particularly good was the Monkees set with Daydream Believer to
end a half that was especially rocked by the Hippy Hippy Shake,
Summer Holidays, Needles and Pins and Orbison's Pretty Woman.
The second half began with the band's tribute to Sergeant Pepper
complete with psychedelic outfits straight off the album cover.
For the Imposters, celebrating 25 years in the business, this was
their forte after many years appearing under the alter ego of
Beatles tribute specialists the Piggies.
We continued with the California sound of the Byrds, a vibrant
Who with a seriously energetic Roger Daltry, Donovan's Mellow
Yellow, Simon and Garfunkel rocking it up to Mrs Robinson and a
major Rolling Stones set to finish.
For effort and enjoyment, long may the Imposters continue to
thrill. They are Ian Latimer and Mitch Deighton alongside new boys
Ricky Barber and Greg Webb. They deserved the cheers that
accompanied every song and the dancing in the aisles finale of Hi Ho
Silver Lining was pure gold.
