Washbrook's Diary
Holiday to Exmouth with the Sheppard's
Sunday 29th June 2003
After the journey down yesterday we decided to go for a walk along Exmouth’s long sea front. We noticed that it was the ‘Exmouth Beach Project, Sand Sculpting Contest’. We spent the next couple of hours under the lovely warm sun, with a fair breeze rising off the sea, while watching the impressive sculpting. It was around this time that during closer inspection I had a little run in with a sand troll!
Being at the sea side once more brought back memories of my days on the sea enjoying my hobby of sailing. Dressed for the occasion with my trusty sailing hat in place I took a visit to the R.N.L.I. headquarters where they kindly lent me one of their smaller crafts for a quick sail.
After a long and most enjoyable first day we returned to the flat to relax with a lovely dinner cooked by Katherine and Peter and a bottle of wine…I must admit though that I may have had a little to much to drink as by the end of the evening I’m told I was unable to stand without the aid of the bottle for stability!
Monday 30th June 2003
A change of scene with a visit to the Bicton Botanical Gardens just outside Budleigh Salterton. Whilst enjoying a tour round the grounds on the 11o’clock mini railway train I couldn’t help but think “what a pity we couldn’t have shared the fun with Sarah!
The rest of the morning was spent walking around the scenic grounds, admiring the fabulous scenery and enjoying yet more of the dazzling sun. All of us gained a bit of a sunburn during the day.
We returned in the middle of the afternoon for a little nip-nap before departing for Exeter Cathedral practice night where we were all treated to some superb ringing, as well as being allowed to have a few goes ourselves!
Tuesday 1st July 2003
A quick stop at Exeter station to collect Katherine’s train ticket (she goes home tomorrow) before continuing in the car to the quaint little village of Shaldon and her sister town who shares the river Teign, Teignmouth. After a walk a long the front and eye up the mini-golf course we stopped at a pub for lunch. Returning to Exmouth in the afternoon the younger members of the holiday group enjoyed mini-golf after we were all treated to some quite interesting ice-creams, including the ‘Time Bomb’ ‘Sandcastle’ and one which promised no less than 6 million calories!
Wednesday 2nd July 2003
We took a pretty laid back approach to the day as we let our sunburn cool down. We took the late morning ‘Round Robin’ trip up the river by boat (sounds familiar) to Topsham from Exmouth seafront. Once in Topsham we found a nice pub for lunch before getting the train back to Exmouth, admiring the Marine Training Headquarters at Lympstone as we passed.
Another nip-nap during the late afternoon before we headed to Exeter station to see Katherine off and then onto St. Marks practice, before home for a nice long soak in the bath and then bed.
Thursday 3rd July 2003
Another relaxing day to finish the week and little food because we had enjoyed rather a lot of it over the last few days and were feeling a bit bloated. A gentle stroll was decided on to see the town and most of the morning was spent wandering round the many shops.
The afternoon was enjoyed aboard a boat again, this time out to sea and down the Jurassic Coast, the worlds oldest national heritage site. The return part aroused amusement as we passed a nudist beach close to the shore with many of the women cracking jokes about the male occupants, “it must be cold”. I don’t know what they meant, I was trying to see the Peregrine Falcon the driver was pointing out!
The hot sun and lack of protection gave more alarming sunburn requiring treatment with ‘after sun’ once we had returned to the apartment.
Friday 4th July 2003
A ‘goodbye’ walk along the sea front and a game or two on the pitch and putt, another ice-cream and then it was time to hit the motorway and head home, minds focussed on tomorrows happy occasion, the wedding at Aldbourne. It was a good holiday with more sun than England is accustomed to. I now look forward to my next journey, I hope my passport is still valid?!
