Commentary on 4/5/95 full council election

From the Leicester Mercury 5/5/95

Labour tightened its grip on North West Leicestershire District council by capturing nine seats from the Tories. In a night of misery for the Conservatives, former rural stronghlds such as Appleby, Breedon, Kegworth and Ravenstone turned to Labour, which also mopped up all but one seat in Ashby. Conservatives were reduced to just three seats, with group leader David Stevenson scraping home with a two-vote majority over his Labour rival James Dutton.

The Liberal Democrats failed to win their Ashby target seats as protest votes moved straight from Conservative to Labour, plus Independent candidate Gerry Orme. Labour's one upset was the failure of long-serving planning chairman, Wally Quelch, to clinch Swannington.
