Roadworks Music Live!

John Smith - 31st August 2006

Having caught Johns support set at The Lowry (on John Martyns Spring tour), we knew we were in for a great night, and Mr Smith didn’t disappoint. With Harry Harrison on impeccable, fluid and Jazzy double bass, John treated us to two sets, including material from his current CD, The Fox and The Monk, and some superb new songs, plus a corking skiffle version of Gnarls Berkley’s Crazy (it works!).

The crowd quickly warmed to John, and his remarkable gravel & honey vocals - plus of course the stunning guitar playing, which left many transfixed. As much as the crowd enjoyed Johns skills, he seemed to enjoy the atmosphere and the warmth of the audience too, and we hope that we can lure him back next year, if he isnt too rich and famous by then. If you get the chance, see him in an intimate venue - where the poetry and grace of this remarkably gifted young mans songs will leave you stunned, and smiling.

Support : Kamal Arafa

A late addition to our bill, Kamal brought his quirky, literate rocky/folky songs to Roadworks and impressed us all. With girlfriend Rachel on lovely backing vocals, Kamal really got the night of to a good start. Clean, fluid guitar playing, and a really strong vocal helped to bring Kamals excellent songs to life. Have a listen! : Kamal Arafa
