Roadworks Music Live!

John Hammond, the legendary US record producer, is famously quoted as saying after his first experience of ‘The Boss’ : “ I have seen the future of rock & roll, and it’s called Bruce Springsteen”. The audience at Thursday nights ‘Roadworks’ live night at The Cinnamon Club in Altrincham might be forgiven for borrowing from Mr Hammond, and paraphrasing to: “We have seen the future of acoustic guitar playing, and it’s called Jon Gomm”, such was the unforgettable virtuoso performance given by the Blackpool born singer songwriter.

Jon Gomm - Thursday 27th July 2006

Using just his beloved hand made Lowden acoustic guitar, “Wilma”, and some basic effects processors, Jon both stunned and thrilled the enthralled crowd.

The Gomm style takes some describing, but if you can imagine a combination of Heavy Metal, Steve Vai style ‘shredding’, beautifully disciplined finger-picking, funky ‘thumb’ bass lines and ‘guitar drumming’ of Keith Moon-esque fluidity, and all at the same time – you might come close!

Poor “Wilma” bears the scars of this abusive guitar style, but the results is a sound that it is difficult to believe comes from just one man and one guitar.

Opening with his own reworking of the Bob Marley classic “Wait in Vain”, Jon took the audience through a sweaty, high octane set of his own excellent songs, (from his debut CD ‘Hypertension’), via Radiohead’s “High & Dry”, to a brilliantly entertaining encore, which included such diverse offerings as The Fine Young Cannibals “She drives me crazy” (complete with audience “woo –woo’s”!) and a medley of Led Zeppelin classics.

This was a truly remarkable performance, by an innovative and exciting artist, deserving of a wider audience. If you get the chance, see Jon Gomm for yourself, and if you think you can play the guitar, prepare to feel humble.
