An explanation is in
order:
It has not been
determined as to whether the two names Crittenden and Cruttenden do in
fact stem from the two different geographical locations or from just one.
The two names are fairly evenly balanced in the United Kingdom but
overseas there are far more Crittenden than Cruttenden. As I mentioned the
two spellings are sometimes interchangeable, even in their home areas of
Kent and Sussex in the south-east of England. It would appear that as the
name spread worldwide the Crittenden spelling predominated for some, as
yet unexplained, linguistic reason. In many cases the migrant will find
the original spelling to be Cruttenden. In early times the Cruttenden
spelling was the more predominant. Crittendon and Crittenton are only to
be found in the United States.
