Hal was born in 1969 in west London, the second child of Neville and Julia Cruttenden. He is the younger brother of Abigail Cruttenden.

In just four years since his appearance at the Edinburgh Festival as a Daily Telegraph Open Mic finalist, Hal made his solo debut at the 2002 Festival and was a Perrier Best Newcomer Nominee confirmation of his rapid rise through the ranks to the pinnacle of the UK comedy circuit. His unique perspective on life and, amongst other things, the traumas of being a sensitive man in a macho world, set him apart as a true original.Television has recognised this resulting in many appearances including The 11 O’Clock Show (Channel 4), Live at Jongleurs (UK Gold), The Warehouse (Carlton), Brain Candy (Baby Cow Productions), House of Fun (Meridien), Hoot (Bravo), and Net.Comedy (Action Time). On his last visit to the Edinburgh Festival in 1999, he co-presented Carlton Comedy Warehouse (STV and Carlton), two half-hour programmes following his season with Mitch Benn and Mitchell Anderson at the Assembly Rooms. He has also written for Radio 4’s Fast Thick Pants and recently appeared on 4 At The Store.

Originally trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Hal has appeared in two movies, Mrs Dalloway and The Madness of King George. On television his acting credits include Eastenders, Kavanagh QC, Out of the Blue, Touching Evil and Bramwell. Most recently, he appeared in Shackleton starring Kenneth Branagh.

 

Hal Cruttenden's excellent reputation on the UK comedy circuit was confirmed by his appearance at this year's Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, which saw his show singled out as one of the most successful first appearances at the event.Hal's big breakthrough as a stand up came with his nomination for the Perrier Newcomer Award at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival for his solo show 'Hal', followed by a highly successful run the following year of his second show, 'To Hal and Back', which was also performed at the Soho Theatre in London at the end of 2003. He is a regular at all the major clubs including the Comedy Store and Jongleurs.Hal's television credits include 'The 11 O'Clock Show', (Channel 4), 'Brain Candy' (BBC3), 'Live at Jongleurs' (UK Gold/Paramount), 'The Warehouse' (Carlton TV), 'Carlton Comedy Warehouse' (Carlton/STV), 'Hoot' (Bravo), 'Net.Comedy' (Action Time), 'Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards' (Channel 5), 'House of Fun' (Meridien) and 'The World Stands Up' for the Paramount Comedy Channel, UK, The Comedy Channel, Australia and Comedy Central in the U.S. His radio appearances include Radio 4's 'Four at the Store'.

Hal has also performed all over the world including shows for Factory Productions/Comedy Store in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and for Paramount International in Kuwait, The Singapore Comedy Festival at Jubilee Hall in the world famous Raffles Hotel, The One Night Stand Comedy Club, China, Comedy Club, Shanghai, and The Jakarta Comedy Club. He also invited to and performed at the opening of the first comedy venue in Bali. In Europe he has appeared at Toomlers, Amsterdam and the Netherlands, The Lucky Strike Tour - Netherlands (Breda, Groningen and Eindhoven) and Comedy Club, Brussels.

Hal is also an actor and has appeared in 'Shackleton', 'Eastenders', 'Kavanagh QC', 'Out of the Blue', 'Touching Evil' and 'Bramwell'. One film he has appeared in 'Mrs Dalloway' and 'The Madness of King George'.
