Over 5.3 million men served on both sides of the American Civil War. The Cruttenden family served on both sides, in some cases brother against brother. Major-General George B. Crittenden C.S.A. and Major-General Thomas L. Crittenden U.S.A were sons of Senator John J. Crittenden of 'Crittenden Compromise' fame.
Many men were not born in the United States but decided to do their duty for their new country.
