A census of the population was taken in many countries to provide population statistics.
This was first done for England and Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands in 1801. Thereafter it was taken every ten years, except in 1941 when the country was at war.
Scotland was responsible for taking its own census at the same time.
The census was taken on the following dates:

Sunday 3 April 1881

In the United States of America a census was first taken in 1790 and at ten yearly intervals since then.
Canada has taken a census in 1825, 1831, 1842, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 31 March 1901.
