How Many do I Need 

 

Employers are legally bound to ensure than an employee who is injured or taken ill at work receives immediate attention. The HSE will prosecute in cases where they see a disregard for established standards or persistent poor compliance with the law. Find out more on the HSE website

The number of first aiders you require is governed by the risk category of your business and the number of employees you have. The table below shows the minimum requirements. You may well need more than this to cover holidays, sickness, shift patterns etc.

Lower Risk

Shops, Offices, Banks

Less than 50 1 appointed person at all times.
50 to 100 1 first aider at all times
More than 100 1 additional first aider per 100 employees
Medium Risk

Assembly Plants, Food Processing, Warehouses

Less than 20 1 appointed person at all times.
20 to 50 1 first aider at all times
More than 50 1 additional first aider per 100 employees
Higher Risk

Construction, Heavy Machinery, Chemicals

Less than 5 1 appointed person at all times.
5 to 50 1 first aider at all times
More than 50 1 additional first aider per 50 employees
