Currency Overview
If you just want to download the one I wrote then skip to near the bottom of the page.
If you're interested by the issue of Discworld currency or if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about then please read on.
Updated - 09/03/04 - The Currency Conversion Calculator and the contents of this page have been updated due to new coins being released in Djelibeybi. The Calculator was also tweaked a little to clear old data from the result fields automatically whenever Convert is clicked.
Updated 21/09/04 - Another update to the program and this page due to the Ducat being released in Genua.
Updated 04/06/05 - Yet another update due to a new coin. The quote from the help file has also been updated and includes the text on notation. The AM Crown had been in game for quite a while so I thought I'd better update the program.
Updated 11/08/05 - Three new Lancre coins. Spelling of Ptascp corrected. AM pence now known as penny for single coins as per latest help file and this is now indicated in how the program displays them. Witchit beads now come under Howondaland on the selection drop-downs and not just Witchit beads. I have added the missing hyphen in Ankh-Morpork. Tab order updated for new coins. Field sizes now accommodate largest possible results without overflow. Please discard outdated copies of the program and replace with the new version (1.4)
The Problem of Understanding Discworld Currency
The different countries and regions around the Disc use different currencies. Once you start traveling around the place it can become confusing when you obtain coins from a foreign land.
How much are they worth in "real money"? How many of these little ones make one of the big shiny ones? Questions like these start to spring up. Naturally your first port of call should be the currency help file. To save you the trouble, here is the result of trying "help currency".

Some currencies feature special notation.
Lancre
> LC 1|2|3 1/4
That is 1 Lancre crown, 2 Lancre shillings and 3 Lancre pennies and 1 Lancre farthing, notated as 1/4 of a penny (see
section Values). The base for Lancre coinage is 12.
Genua
> 1,2,3,4Gd
The first number is the amount of Genua ducats, the second forins, the third livres and the fourth cents (from left to
right this would be 1 ducat, 2 forins, 3 livres and 4 cents). The highest coin type will be displayed with its symbol
of either Gd, Gf, Gl or Gc (where ducat > forin > livre > cents). I.e. if you have a ducat, it will display Gd etc.
Djelibeybi
> DjToon 611.10
In Djelibeybi the value of all coins is added together and displayed in DjToon, see section Values for how to get to
that number.Because there are so many currencies in use on the Disc, the information provided here could change without notice.

moneyDid everyone follow that ok? Well ... it's fairly easy to understand but you quickly realise that it's going to take a bit of work with a calculator to determine the value of the currency you've obtained. If someone could write a program to calculate it for you then that would be far easier. Which brings us nicely to the subject of ...
Pendrake's Currency Conversion Calculator
Here it is folks! Written in Visual Basic and then compiled into a stand-alone exe file. No installation necessary. Just click the link below, choose to save it to disk, pick a location for it to be saved to (the desktop would be a good place) and it's ready to go. Double click it whenever you want it.
Note - A zipped version is now also available to prevent your firewall/antivirus/antispyware blocking the download. This will need extracting with winzip.
Yes I want to download Pendrake's Nifty Gadget!!!
I'd rather have a zipped version to avoid troubling my firewall/antivirus/antispyware please!!!
Notes on usage
It pretty much explains itself, but here's some additional info:
General Notes
I am aware that I am not the only person to have written a program of this kind. I can assure you that I had not seen any other program of this type before I wrote this one (or I would not have bothered, I would have just downloaded somebody else's).
Personally I believe mine to be better than any other I have seen, but then I suppose I would and this is just a personal opinion.
