I haven't read many books about Mind Mapping. It is fairly straightforward, I'm not sure how useful books are. If you go to amazon.co.uk and type in "Mind Map" you get a lot of books by Tony Buzan. I've read these two and they are both excellent.

Software
There is other software available. As I find out more I'll add the sites
here. Most of these sites have trial versions available for free download. I
haven't tried all these programs and I'm not recommending one over the over.
In the end it's just down to personal preference and cost. I have compared software
marked with a (*) here.
MindManager UK. (*) For various versions of MindManager. Make sure you ask for an education discount if you buy it. There is a free viewer available from this site that can be used to view the maps available from download from this page. There is also a version for the Palm Pilot which can synchronise with the desktop version. I found it to be too slow on a Palm III but lovely on a colour Palm M130. Seems expensive though.
Inspiration. (*) An excellent program for students to use. Can be used in a similar way to MindManager too. It's geared more towards educational use than MindManager.
MindMapper. Again there are various versions available including a Junior version which looks good. The desktop version can link with Mind Image.
Mind Image. This is a mind mapping program for the Palm Pilot. It can export to text, Shadow Plan (another Palm program) and MindMapper. It is quick enough to use and cheap ($10). You can get a free trial.
Ygnius is a British program geared primarily for business use. It is similar in scope to MindManager and links with Microsoft Office programs.
ConceptDraw MindMap. (*) Different versions, links with other programs, and a Mac version as well. This is a very full-featured program that can produce lovely looking maps.
Visual Mind (*) This program has a small set of icons and fairly basic formatting. It's good for Internet work as it's easy to make links to web pages and e-mail addresses. Also, you can make interactive maps for the Internet. Viewers needn't have a copy of the program. You can see an example of this by clicking here.
VisiMap (Umm... if this had been further up the list I would have been able to write more.)
SoftNeuron is more basic than most but it's only £6.50!!! Definitely worth a look.
FreeMind goes one better than SoftNeuron in that it's free (but it is a lot more basic). It runs in your browser as a Java applet. I haven't been entirely successful in using it but I think that's more a problem with my system than with the program.
Information and ideas
Buzan Centre Tony Buzan is the person who first developed mind maps. This is a good site to start at and he has written some wonderful books too.
Map Your Mind Another good general introduction, with examples.
Peter Russell is an interesting man with lots of fascinating ideas. He has some nice information about mind maps as well.
Brainstorming.co.uk has lots of ideas about how to Brainstorm and tools to help you 'think outside the box', including downloadable software.
Creativity Web has lots of ideas to help people think... creatively... and for developing the mind.
Six Sigma is a business site but lots of the ideas can be applied to education and they are clearly explained. The company have a very interesting looking piece of software, which unfortunately has a business price! (So I haven't been able to try it.)
Graphic Organisers is a page with links to lots and lots of interactive tools and visual tools. Very very good!!
Mind Tools is a commercial website with some free tools and lots of good ideas.
The Mind Maps are saved as MindManager files, which are editable if you
have MindManger, or viewable with the MindManager View, which is FREE and available
here.
You can also download them as PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files, which are not editable.
If this doesn't work let me know, I haven't been able to test it properly.

Getting started with ILS
NCET (1996) The ILS Handbook or the
book I wish I'd had before I started with ILS Published by NCET (now BECTa)
ISBN 1853793752 Click

Worth reading before you buy anything.
Issues and research
Underwood, J. & Brown, J. (eds)
(1997) Integrated Learning Systems - potential into practice Published
by NCET (now BECTa) ISBN 0435096907 Click
to buy
This book was written after the second phase of the NCET/BECTa research. The chapters are written by the people who did the research and provides a lot more detail than the reports do. This is a really interesting book which provides lots of information and raises some interesting questions.
NCET/BECTa finished the final phase of a three phase investigation into ILS in the UK. All three reports are worth reading, especially the last one. Look at the issues page for information about some of it's findings. Free summaries of the first two phases are available from BECTa's ILS page.

Interesting but superseded by the phase II evaluation.
NCET (1995) ILS: A report of phase
II of the pilot evaluation of ILS in the UK Published by NCET/BECTa ISBN

Easier to read than the final report, and arguably more useful.
BECTa (1998) The UK ILS Evaluations:
Final Report Published by BECTa ISBN 1853794147 Click
to buy
Difficult to follow and inconclusive, to say the least. However, it raises important and challenging questions and is essential reading. You can't get this from Amazon yet but you can direct from BECTa. They also do a good deal if you get all three reports together.
McFarlane, A. (1999) ILS: A guide to good practice Published by BECTa ISBN 1853794309
This is a good easy-to-read summary of the BECTa research. McFarlane uses the findings of the research to give guidance about making the most of ILS systems. Highly recommended.
There's also an Australian report called the 'Fitzgerald Report'. This is very interesting because it looks at the perceptions of staff and students. I couldn't find it for ages but now it's turned up at http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/lt/cal_eval.htm . The executive summary is there and there's a link to download the full report (as a Word 6 file).

RM Learning Systems The Successmaker page at RM.
This site has a download-able copy of 'Successmaker at Work' (in pdf) format, which features small-scale school based research findings, including the pilot study conducted at Carter Community School. It also has contact information about Successmaker - RM are the only people licensed to sell it in the UK. If you are a Successmaker service-contract holder there is a useful virtual support centre there too.
CCC Successmaker CCC (the Computer Curriculum Corporation), who make Successmaker.
The best place to start if you want to find out more about particular courses, and the range of courses that Successmaker can offer.
ILS (Great Yarmouth High School) Links to sites of other manufacturers of ILS.
If you want to find the homepages of the companies who manufacture other ILS, start here. Successmaker is not the only one, and although it always comes out on top in research, it may be that there is an alternative that fits your particular needs more effectively.
BECTa have a lot of information about Successmaker and ILS, but it's not in an easy-to-link-to format. The best thing to do is go to http://www.becta.org.uk and type 'integrated learning systems' into the search box.
The Times Educational Supplement is also a good place to look. Go to their website at http://www.tes.co.uk and type 'Successmaker' into the search box.
Great Yarmouth High School A great Successmaker site with lots of useful information.
Aberdeen Grid for Learning Lots of very practical resources - certificates, worksheets, all sorts.
Effective Use of Successmaker. PowerPoint 2000 presentation (659Kb)
Carter Community School Successmaker Handbook. Word 2000 (92Kb)
Collaborative Use of the Successmaker ILS. Word 2000 (1.27Mb). MEd dissertation.
Survey of Successmaker at CCS. Word 2000 zipped file (761Kb). Qualitative survey into staff and student perceptions of Successmaker's effectiveness.
Collaborative Learning Theory
Balson, Maurice (1982) Understanding
Classroom Behaviour Australia: Australian Council
for Educational Research ISBN: 1857423860 Click to buy
Talks about the 'democratic' approach to education, and argues that most discipline problems are caused because schools are not democratic.
Glasser, William (1986) Control
Theory in the Classroom New York: Harper &
Row ISBN 006096085X Click to buy
Control theory is a horrible phrase (he calls it Choice Theory now, which is more appropriate). Glasser's style is hard going, I think, but his ideas are good, especially as regards education. This book is a good general introduction for the classroom teacher. I haven't got a clue how accurate his theory is, but his ideas about how children can be encouraged to learn make sense and work. There is a Glasser Institute web site.
Glasser, William (1992) The Quality
School New York: HarperCollins ISBN 0060952865
Click to buy
More about control theory, but this time concentrating on whole school approaches. If you can cope with him always going in about how amazing his ideas are without ever producing any proper research evidence to back anything up, then this is a good book!
Weil, Susan and McGill, Ian (eds) (1989) Making sense of experiential learning Society for Research into Higher Education & Open University Press
Haven't read this yet. It includes two articles: Boud D (1989) `Some Competing Traditions in Experiential Learning` and O'Reilly D (1989) `On Being an Educational Fantasy Engineer: Incoherence, 'The Individual' and Independent Study`
Collaborative Learning - Practical

Lots of lesson ideas for secondary maths. Also theory about the advantages of student collaboration.
McNamara, Sylvia & Moreton, Gill (1995) Changing Behaviour London: Fulton ISBN 1853467456 Click to buy
A brilliant book, with theory (backed up with reference to research) and practical ideas.
Hanko, Gerda (1995) Special Needs in Ordinary Classrooms London: Fulton ISBN 1853463914
A book that sets out to get education professionals working together. I went to a lecture and workshop by Gerda Hanko recently and it was brilliant.
Johnson D W and Johnson R T (1982) Joining together: Group theory and group skills Prentice-Hall
Johnson and Johnson are regarded as experts in group work. I haven't read this one but they have excellent ideas.
Johnson D W and Johnson R T (1991) Learning
Together and Alone Needham Heights: Allyn and
Bacon IBSN 0135286549 Click to buy
This is very good, lots of practical ideas and theory to back it up.
Jaques D (1984) Learning in Groups Croom Helm
Again, I haven't read this, but it contains the NASA game, which looks excellent (I'm going to try it soon......)
Self-esteem

Centre for Paired Learning - Dundee University site, concentrating on paired learning for non-teachers.
Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning - a fairly in-depth study.
Walsh's Classroom Sociometrics - a great program for creating sociograms and other sociometric tables and charts.
