Outreach to Older Folk in our
Community with ‘Christians-in-Loughborough’ ..... means regular visits to sheltered, residential
and nursing homes, to bring older (often lonely, sometimes ill, frail or
infirm) folk into an assurance of God's love and forgiveness, by
introducing them to Jesus Christ through His Gospel ~ 'Good News'. ‘C-i-L’ are men and women drawn from many
Christian traditions in our town who give about an hour a month to this
urgent ministry amongst older folk. During our ‘Times of Praise’ we sing well-loved
hymns (and some new ones, too!), hear the scriptures, listen to a short
gospel-based talk, and pray together.
Sometimes there is a solo singer, drama – or even puppets!
Usually ending with a nice ‘cuppa and a chat. In the Book of Exodus, God commands us to ‘honour
your father and your mother ..." and
Saint Paul instructs us all to 'Treat older men as you would your own
father, and older women as you would your mother'
(1 Timothy 5:1-2). This is a lovely gentle ministry to those who so
appreciate it; and we are
always made welcome by the residents and staff in the homes. You’ll meet Christians from other local churches, and
if you wish to speak, read, lead, play an instrument, or sing - or make
some cakes - great!
But you need only do that which you are able – and holding the
hand of a frail person works wonders. Caring love means more than words. Your presence (young, middle-aged or elderly!) on the team could make a real difference!
